Financial Fair Play rules - Man City & PSG warned

I know the FFP rules have been discussed quite a few times and there has been much speculation as to whether Man City and Chelsea would get away with ingnoring them. Now comes a report from EUFA, that has been reported in a number of national papers. The Telegraph carries an interesting quote.

"Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino said it would be wrong to prejudge those figures but added: “They have to demonstrate that they can cover their costs with the revenues that they generate without cheating. If the result is that something went wrong then sanctions will be taken.”

Infantino insisted Uefa was not afraid to exclude a big club from one of its competitions, having already banned 34 teams – including Malaga and Besiktas – for breaches of other articles under FFP. “Uefa will not be happy to do that, but Uefa will do that,” he added.

An independent adjudicatory chamber will impose any sanctions, which could spark legal action over the interpretation of “fair market value”.

Infantino was philosophical. He said: “We were always worried – and I say this with a smile – with clubs that were telling us, ‘We will sue you if you dare take sanctions against us for Financial Fair Play regulations’.
“Now we have the other clubs who will sue us if we don’t take sanctions against those who have breached the rules.”

At least EUFA are making the right noises. Both clubs have spent mega bucks over the last few years so they could easily sell some of their fringe players and buy others whilst breaking even in that window, or even show a profit. The question is will EUFA really act despite making the right noises.

(Mods feel free to move this to one of the other FFP threads if you think it appropiate, or that the discussion has been done to death!)

As said before there is alot of pressure for this to be enforced as clubs certainly from other big clubs like United, Barca and Real as well as clubs in Italy who pretty apparently are the ones behind FFP, so it is interesting how this pans out

Also malaga have a deadline to pay the debts soon or risk 2 years out of the CL, which was the reason behind Monreal's sale which interestingly was the player they owe money for

The interesting aspect for me was the realisation, by EUFA, that those clubs who abide by the FFP rules could sue them for not enforcing the rules in respect of those clubs who do not follow them. I think the potential loss of funds in such a case will, of itself, give them encouragement to enforce the rules.

They could try to find a way around it. However, I think there is too much to lose, particularly by those clubs who miss out on a CL place by one position in the league and another club in the same league has not abided, but still gets a CL spot. I am now hopefull that reality may actually start to kick in, or am I being optimistic?

I'd love to see Man City and Chelsea banned from the champions league especially Chelsea. I'd go and find one of the glory hunting chelsea fans in my area and laugh in his face.

The payoffs from PSG and City should more than cover the lawyers fees from other clubs suing to have FFP enforced.

How about Anzhi?

There's no way that club makes the money they are spending on players from sponsorship deals/gate receipts/tv money.

Interestingly, there is no mention of Real Madrid and Barca. Maybe they get so much money from the gate receipts and TV money that their purchase of players for anywhere from £40 - £80m is within the limits. Perhaps because they only make one or two purchases year.

Like most people I can't wait for the rules to be fully implemented. I'd love to see Man Shity and Chelscum fall foul and be excluded and fined mega bucks!

I do t think they will excluded but will have to curb their spending, hence why Chelsea went mad spending so much in the last season, and city the same although to a lesser degree. Hopefully it will all even out a little, in essence with the new stadium eventually we will be more powerful than Chelsea but will it really happen or will they find loop holes in the system!

PSG will be interesting for FIFA and UEFA. Platini's son works for QSI, the Qatar Sports Investment firm that owns Paris Saint-Germain as Legal Consultant. He is qualified for that role and it is said he has no direct involvement with PSG.. but Michel Platini was always so vocal when it came to English clubs spending, I wonder what he will think of a French one.

He has a english agenda and thats according to french journo's not the bitter english media as often made out by Uefa

As for PSG the week Beckham signed french football magazine printed a 20 page report called Qatargate and basically highlighted that the accusations of corruption against the Qatari's and said that the prince had a meeting with Sarkozy, Platini and the owner of PSG which was coincidentally the club sarkozy supported:rolleyes:.

The magazine highlighted how a World cup would be very good for the French and ten days later Platini went back and casted a vote for the Qatari's. Then the Qatari's went and brought Sarkozy's favourite team a year later. Then as Martin Samuel says David Beckham came last week the same week the report was published and gave his wages(which isnt that much compared to image rights) to charity. Yet as most people say this isnt a PR stunt

Yep, I started a thread about the Qatar issue. Platini was encouraged to vote for Qatar or not pursue an enquiry (forget now) by Sarkozy because of 'geopolitical' reasons.

This is true, but I think they spent even more before season that the FFP rules first take into account. By selling the players from the earlier years they could circumvent the effect of the rules. However, the problem they are likely to have is the level of wages that they are paying. The players will not want to take such a big drop in money so Shitty & Chelscum will find it difficult to sell, ala Ade.

Time will tell. Let's hope FFP works, for the good of football. :cautious:
