In this case Levy was very much within his rights to make it as hard as possible for ManU to take Carrick away (not made easy by Carrick's own insistence on wanting to leave).

Sir Alex Ferguson: Tottenham's Daniel Levy made Michael Carrick's Manchester United transfer 'difficult'

Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester United were forced to bide their time to sign Michael Carrick during "very hard" transfer negotiations with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Carrick became a key player in Spurs after arriving from West Ham in 2004, dominating midfield to earn the attention of United two years later.

Spurs rejected a bid for Carrick from United in early June before eventually agreeing a deal worth over £18million in late July, with the England international going on to star at Old Trafford.

The midfielder won five Premier League titles and the Champions League under Ferguson's guidance, and the legendary manager will once again coach Carrick for the 34-year-old's United testimonial on June 4.

Despite Carrick's United career being one of almost uninterrupted success, Ferguson has revealed that the move looked in doubt at times due to Levy's famously tough negotiating stance.

"I must say negotiations were very difficult and went on for ages," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"I always remember I thought it was done and [former United chief executive] David Gill phoned me on the golf course to say they want more.

"Typical Daniel Levy!

“It was very hard to negotiate but, at the end of the day, we got it through and, ever since he joined us, he’s had a fantastic career."

Dimitar Berbatov followed Carrick from Tottenham to United in 2008 in a £30m deadline-day deal, despite Spurs' initial complaints over the Red Devils' pursuit of the Bulgarian striker.

Ferguson was also left impressed by Carrick's decision to leave the north-east for West Ham as a teenager, adding: "A 16-year-old kid going way down from Newcastle to east London - that’s a trek, and it epitomised to me the confidence the boy had in himself. That impressed me."

Hopefully Berbatov and Carrick will be the last players we sell to Utd, times have changed and they're not going to be the draw they once were.

I think the key was that BMJ had identified Carrick as the hub of his side, was building the squad around him, then he was gone in what seemed like a heartbeat. In reality, i imagine the dealings had been going on behind closed doors, even out of view of Jol, for months prior to this, but once it had happened we were stuck with a team that didn't have a proper fulcrum in charge. Thudd stepped up a little, he did have a sweet pass on him, but he couldn't compare to the way Carrick pulled the squad together.

Modric ? Different type of player I know - but better.

Yes definitely a better player, but certainly a very different player. It also took Modric a long time to become part of our central midfield (not his fault most of the time) so even when we had him we didn't get the full Carrick replacement straight away.

What a pain Levy must be trying to get the best price for a player he didnt want to sell. How very frustrating for Fergie..

Still got him on the cheap.

Didn't Carrick say he would have stayed if we paid him as much as our top earners?
But that twat Comolli said sell him and get Zokora, who's better.

No, Zokora was never the replacement for Carrick. It's just the timing of Carrick's departure and Zokora's arrival seem to imply he was.

I'm sure Comolli was actually quoted saying that Carrick was let go because they had Zokora lined up who was better

Yes, but there was a two year gap between Carrick leaving and Modric signing, and then it was another year until Modric had acclimatised and was being properly deployed in CM (Harry put him LM when he first took over).

In the Summer 2016 window, we replaced Carrick with Zokora, then released Davids in the January (n)

EDIT: Summer 2006!
