I regret to say I'd never heard of them before  so I thought I ought to do some research.

They play in the Ukrainian Premier League and are currently 5th out of 16 having played 17 games and won 8.
BTW one of the other clubs is called Arsenal!

Shakhtar Donetsk play us in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 after finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group.

Group C Pld Pts

26.11.2008 v Basel (H) 5-0

According to Wikipedia:-

The team has played under the following names: Stakhanovets (1936-1946), Shakhtyor (1946-1992) and FC Shakhtar (since 1992).

In the 1960s, Shakhtar under Oleg Oshenkov’s coaching were three-time USSR Cup finalists, winning it twice in 1961 and 1962. The club was nicknamed “The Cup Team” due to Shakhtar’s success in vying for the trophy every year. Eek

In 1975, Shakhtar took 2nd in the USSR Championship and received the right to represent the Soviet Union in European competition. In 1978, Shakhtar finished third in the USSR Championship. A year later, the team finished second and its captain – striker Vitaliy Starukhin – was named the best player and the best forward in the USSRChampionship (26 goals scored).

In the newly independent Ukraine, Shakhtar along with Dynamo Kyiv became perennial first place competitors. In 1999, a Shakhtar Football academy was opened and now hosts football training for roughly 3,000 children.

For the last several seasons Shakhtar has the highest home attendance in a league, averaging at about 20,000 per game.

FC Shakhtar has been playing most of its games at the RSK Olimpiyskiy stadium. The team has started construction on a new stadium, Donbass Arena which will have a capacity of 50,000 and will be a UEFA five star venue.

They also came within of an injury-time equaliser by Palop of putting Sevilla out in the Round of 32 two years ago. Absolutely no mugs, and if we can get any kind of result over there we'll have done well.

I think that this was a 'dead' game because Barcelona had already qualified. Not that that greatly diminishes the task we have in front of us. A draw there ,preferably 1-1 would be great.

It was mainly Barcelona's reserves (click on link for ESPN match report)

However, they will be hard to beat

1 -1 in the away leg will be a good result IMO

I hope HR plays mainly squad players and keeps our best players fresh for the bigger games that are coming up

I'm surprised you've never heard of Shaktar, they've been in the Champions League for the last few years.

I'm with you Geez

until/unless spurs get into it, the CL mainly passes me by

I don't think i've watched one CL match this season, and it's quite likely I won't manage a whole one unless we get an english club in the final again

Now that's a crying shame. Especially in the knockout stage, the champions league is a very nice antidote of good football to the generally awful football we put up with in the premier league. For the same reason I watch alot of La Liga as well.

They are not as good as they were several years ago, but they are still a big team in Ukraine with the Champions League experiense.

Their leaders Darijo Srna and Razvan Rat told Shakhtar's official site that "they are ready to win this matches and that they hope to do it".

This will be a tought contest.
