Toffees in fine form as Spurs aim to get back on track

Tottenham face a tough task to get their Premier League campaign back on track as they go up against an Everton side on a six-match unbeaten run.

It was Spurs who actually inflicted the last defeat on Everton with a 2-0 home win at White Hart Lane in January, a match that had to be rescheduled from the opening weekend of the season.

The Toffees have enjoyed something of a revival in the past couple of months, progressing to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and putting plenty of distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

They remain 13th in the standings but are just a couple of points behind eighth-placed Fulham and will have their sights firmly set on pushing on to secure a top-half finish.

David Moyes' men have certainly proved they can compete with anyone on home turf, having beaten Manchester City and Chelsea in their two most recent league outings at Goodison Park.
Moyes, who will celebrate ten years as Everton manager next week, has been boosted by the return to fitness of several key players as he prepares for the run-in.

Midfielder Darron Gibson (knee) is a few weeks from fitness while on-loan Steven Pienaar is ineligible against his parent club.

However, Leon Osman, Nikica Jelavic and Seamus Coleman all came on as substitutes in the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers last weekend following injury lay-offs.

Phil Jagielka was also given a run-out for the reserves in midweek after two months out with a knee problem, along with Victor Anichebe and James McFadden.
Moyes may not see the need to rush anybody back into the starting XI, though, with everyone in decent form at present to create competition for places.

Top-four bid

Tottenham will be determined to derail Everton's charge up the table and re-establish their own position as a force to be reckoned with this season.

Spurs turned in an improved performance against Manchester United last Sunday following a crushing defeat in the North London derby a week earlier, but ultimately went down 3-1 to the Red Devils.

That result effectively extinguished any lingering hopes Tottenham had of challenging for the title, with Harry Redknapp confirming that he was concentrating on clinching UEFA Champions League qualification.

Tottenham's lead over fourth-placed Arsenal has been cut to just four points, with Chelsea three points further back, but they did at least return to winning ways in midweek to beat Stevenage 3-1 and join Everton in the last eight of the FA Cup.

The likes of Scott Parker, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart returned to action on Wednesday but Michael Dawson suffered ankle ligament damage and will now miss the rest of the season.

Aaron Lennon also had to be taken off after tweaking a hamstring to give Redknapp another fitness concern.

Jermain Defoe pressed his claims for another chance to start in the Premier League with two goals against Stevenage, having come off the bench to net in the loss to United, and Louis Saha is not expected to feature against his former club due to a gentleman's agreement between the managers.

Everton manager David Moyes has several key players in contention to start after injury.

Nikica Jelavic, Seamus Coleman and Leon Osman all came on as substitutes in the 1-1 draw with QPR last weekend following lay-offs.

Scott Parker, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart should start for Tottenham after missing the 3-1 defeat by Manchester United.

But Michael Dawson is out for the season and Aaron Lennon is a doubt.

The middle of next week marks 10 years since David Moyes became Everton's manager. In that decade, the third longest-serving boss in the country (behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger) has seen 56 of his Premier League counterparts lose or leave their jobs - with seven of those going from Chelsea alone! More will depart in the summer, of course, and it's possible that one - or both - of these clubs will be amongst those looking for a new manager.

Everton without Moyes is almost unthinkable, but there are many who believe that this is his time to land a post that could reward his skills with the necessary financial backing to win trophies. Tottenham perhaps? Well, for Spurs fans the 'unthinkable' line applies to Harry Redknapp too - but I'm afraid an awful lot of people are doing little else BUT think that he'll be off to answer the call of his country in May (even if top-flight managers are being warned not to give their England backing to a colleague under contract)!

These two clubs have been playing each other every season in the top flight since 1978/79 and this meeting is their 150th in league football. Everton come into it looking to extend their best run of the season to nine games unbeaten in all competitions, whilst Spurs need a pick-me-up after losing their last two league games (to Arsenal and Manchester United). They haven't lost three in a row since October 2008 - a run that resulted in Juande Ramos being replaced by Redknapp.

Everton almost always raise themselves for home games against the bigger teams, as Chelsea and Manchester City would testify, and I'm expecting a game to match a cracking Goodison Park atmosphere.

With both teams having home FA Cup quarter-final ties next weekend, there's a chance that they'll meet again at Wembley before the season is up. The final is on 5 May. What price a silver lining to a glorious goodbye for one of the managers involved?

Head-to-head

  • Spurs last beat Everton at Goodison Park in February 2007.
  • Tottenham are aiming to do the double over Everton for the first time since 2005/2006.
Everton

  • The Toffees are unbeaten in their previous six league games.
  • Everton have only scored 12 goals in their past 14 league matches.
  • Royston Drenthe scored his third Premier League goal of the season in the club's last match, a 1-1 draw against QPR. Everton won both previous matches in which he found the net.
Tottenham

  • The Lilywhites come into this match having lost back-to-back games for the first time since their opening two fixtures.
  • They have won just two of their past seven league games.
  • Spurs have scored 23 goals in their past 12 league matches.
  • Jermain Defoe scored in his 105th Premier League match as a substitute last week against Manchester United. Just one player, Nwankwo Kanu, has made more substitute appearances (118).

I'm sure I read 4:30 in the week, which I admittedly thought was odd.

If we are missing creative midfielders then Defoe needs to start. He's our only striker who can create a chance for himself.

Apparently Moyes 10years in charge. So they may be really up for it for his honour.
It's going to be a tough game...Here's hoping we win it~!

2-1, but hoping we can force the draw, which will be a good result.
