Steve McClaren has tonight named his starting eleven for Friday's friendly in Austria and Scott Carson is set for his England debut.

Steve McClaren says he will use the friendly against Austria on Friday night to look at players and systems that could prove vital in what he still believes will be a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia next week.

Goalkeeper Scott Carson will make his international debut in Vienna, while Joleon Lescott comes in at the heart of defence alongside Sol Campbell.

David Beckham is also in the line-up in what will be his 98th appearance for the Three Lions, while Frank Lampard also comes in.

Lampard's Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge starts at left-back for his first appearance of the season, while up front, Michael Owen and Peter Crouch start together for the first time since June, when both scored in the 3-0 win over Estonia.

And McClaren explained: "We are looking for different things from this game and different personnel.

"Scott Carson has been around the squad for a long time. His performances for Aston Villa have been very good and I have said all along that this is an ideal opportunity for him to experience international football.

"Gareth Barry was excellent in the last three games and Frank Lampard didn't feature, but Frank's form for Chelsea has been a revelation since and he is playing some of his best football.

"We need Sol Campbell's experience in the centre. I think Micah Richards is important to us at right-back and he has shown that in some games - going forward he is very effective. But maybe at half-time or after 60 minutes we will move him inside."

England's Euro 2008 hopes are heavily dependent on Russia dropping points in Israel on Saturday, but McClaren believes that is more than feasible which means his side must be properly prepared for the clash with Croatia at Wembley.

"Hopefully results will go for us on Saturday and we will go into the Croatia game needing to win to qualify," he said.

"I have always thought that game would be crucial and I still believe it will be the case.

"I am positive at the moment. I always believed Croatia would be the crucial game and there is still a long way to go."

Starting Eleven
Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Sol Campbell, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard (c), Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Owen, Peter Crouch.

Why is Barry dropped, and not Gerrard?
Why is Beckham back?

the rest is understandable.

Desperation?

Relying on all the big name players, same old story, Sven all over. Nonsense basically.

For a man who has said some amazingly stupid things, that is the winner! Yet another aimless, pointless friendly...I stopped watching them live or the whole game under Sven, and I have no intention of watching this one.

The England set up from the FA all the way down to the bottom is awful.

The women's team got £40 a day for playing in the world cup, whilst our men's team will get the £150,000 bonus the FA promised them even if we fail to qualify for Euro 2008. What kind of message is that sending out?

The chief of the League Managers' Association said that speculation about the future of McClaren "beggars belief" and that calling McClaren a bad England manager is wrong.

McClaren isn't a bad England manager, he is an inept England manager. Our qualifying group (apart from the away games in Russia and Croatia) should have been piss easy.

I remember an interview with Alan Mullery when he said that Alf Ramsey would have dropped most of the England team for showing a lack of passion. Maybe that is the problem. Lampard is utter tripe for England but is good for Chelsea. Maybe it's because a lot of modern English footballers care more about the stupid weekly wage they are earning than playing for their country.

This is the problem with English and British sport. Michael Johnson pointed out that one of the reasons the USA wins more at the Olympics than Britain is because in the USA you have to earn the right to represent your country and make a lot of money through sponsorship.

Mark Lewis Francis was picked up by Adidas (I think it was them) and given funding by UK Sport after winning the Junior Olympics - what has he done since? Johnson pointed out that if he were American he would have been dropped from the team by now and had his funding stripped from him until his performances improved.

We reward medicore. The players that continue to play crap (Robinson, Lampard, Gerrard, etc.,) don't get dropped from the team whereas players that have improved and deserve a place in the team (Barry, Bent a few season's ago) don't get a fair crack of the whip.

Totaly agee, by calling him a bad England manager its not showing his domestic managerial skills ether.

It should just be - he is a crap manager.

Couldn`t agree more. I really hope we don`t qualify. They`ve had their chance and fucked it up. They can all sit at home next summer, count their money and watch it on tv.
