They're not even close to valid. Rose and Walker were signed as young prospects, not first team players. They had far more preparation than any player we've signed for the first team because they we intended to load them out from the start.

What long-term approach? What are you even talking about?

Ok, your opening post poses the question: 'Do you think it's better to wrap up dealings early and/or before the season starts? If so, how much of a difference do you think it makes?' Whereas I think what you're actually arguing is that players who are signed earlier in the transfer window make more of an instant impact.

Yours is a tempting conclusion to come to but overall, when faced with the evidence, it doesn't stand up. As has been shown, many of our best players were signed late in the window and went on to have good first seasons with us. The benefits of a preseason with us are offset against the inflated transfer fees earlier in the window. At a guess, I'd say some of our best signings would not have happened if we were determined to do all our business early - we would have moved on to cheaper, more affordable targets and easier, more straightforward deals to close.

Nope.

I'm suggesting that signing players earlier gives them a better chance to adapt to our system and hit the ground running, while posing the question to others.

You don't have any.

As has been shown, many of our best players were signed late in the window and went on to have good first seasons with us.
So you're saying the fact that some of our late signings worked out conclusively proves there are no benefits to signing players early? Not taking into account that they were signed under different management? I beg to differ.

The benefits of a preseason with us are offset against the inflated transfer fees earlier in the window.
Really?

Toby and Victor were inflated at 11 million pounds?
Sissoko at 30 million pounds wasn't inflated?

Prices don't always necessarily drop at the end of a window. More often than not, buying clubs just get more desperate.

At a guess, I'd say some of our best signings would not have happened if we were determined to do all our business early - we would have moved on to cheaper, more affordable targets and easier, more straightforward deals to close.
At a guess, I'd say players like N'Koudou and Sissoko would've done better if they had proper preparation with us.

The club would obviously like to wrap up all incomings before pre-season starts but in reality that's impossible.
We'll probably have plans a, b & c in place for each position and other clubs intentions (both directly & indirectly) will affect how long things take. Plan a might wait to see if city or Chelsea (for example) come in for him whilst keeping us on the back burner. If plan b is very much our second choice we'll wait for plan a.

The good thing is we don't need to sign loads of players (unlike city) so don't need to panic
