So with Chadli and Mason now gone, it got me thinking that did the Dortmund away and Newcastle away games flip a switch with Potch.

The only one so far who's escaped is Tom Carroll, wouldn't be surprised if he left too.

To be a top top team your 2nd XI need to come in and do a job for you and players like Tripper,Carrol,Mason,Bentaleb,Chadli etc have for me not quite been up to it. Tripper we let off a bit as Dortmund away is hard for any full-back with no protection and he's still young and improving but the others have let themselves down too many times.

I like the point someone made about Mason and Bentaleb that when they were our predominant CM pairing they looked good but we finished 5th and could've easily finished 7th, or did we come 7th I can't even remember... Basically not good enough.

Last year Dier and Dembele combo got us to 3rd.

If we can get this young GK, the Marsille winger and a top drawer AM or CM I think we will have had the pretty much perfect transfer window from an ins and outs perspective.

We have players who can fill in at different positions like Dier,Dembele,Alli and Kane and pretty much 2 good players in every position if we get the ones in mentioned.

But question is do you think these 2 matches struck a nerve with potch and the Newcastle game was almost a blessing in disguise as if that hadn't have happened we may have kept the likes of Mason etc.

I remember an article after our defeat against Newcastle Pochettinho was very critical about the players and indicated this might happen i believe he made his mind up then.

In fairness to Pochettinho he has assessed the squad throughly and given players chances to prove themselves and has come to the conclusion we need a more efficient squad with players able to be specialised and also multifunctional case being Alli Dier Eriksen Lamela Kane Alderweireld can play right CB Vertonghen the same.

Funny how our back 5 from both games have escaped blame as well as our DM.

You can blame the unfavoured players by people on here because its easy but equally Eriksen, Dier, Kane, Son, Lamela, Alderweireld, Davies and Vertonghen were just as bad if not worse considering most of these guys had their minds on the summer tournaments and imo took it bit easy

The truth is that we were complacent and that both manager and players are equally to blame

Poch said it made his decision for the summer transfers more easy. Think we're seeing the result now.

What Poch should have taken from the Dortmund game was that the system is paramount and when we fuck with it we suffer. After a season of seamlessly rotating players through the same system each week we changed it and played a different way and got smacked. And we've gone and done the same at the start of this year with the Dier/Wanyama partnership in the middle, albeit with stronger and arguably much better individuals. If we can upgrade on those players then yeah great and maybe those games were the reason for it, but it's very harsh on those individuals now leaving if so.

Out of interest was the Newcastle game after Poch's birthday?

Looking at this window, it's been about upgrading the second string largely. Janssen, Wanyama etc. may start if everybody is available, or they may not. Then there's Winks, CCV and Onomah, and a few more behind them, who are younger still.

Out went Mason, Bentaleb, Pritchard (hardly got to play), Fazio (again), Chadli... And Carroll is looking vulnerable too.

MP is far from blameless in the Dortmund away fixture. To go into that away BVB game with such a weak side was suicidal, we got exactly what we deserved in that game.

We havent really upgraded one position as of yet!!!!

We didnt have a back up Defensive Midfielder nor a back up Striker

Agreed, but understand the reason he did it.......we had our first realistic shot at the title in 30 years. He had to prioritise and I agreed with him.

I have far less sympathy re the newcastle game where the players basically imploded against a relegated side down to 10 men. The whole team/squad were not properly prepared mentally for what needed to be done......1 bloody point against a crap side.

Almost 3 months and I'm still angry

A midfield combo of Dier and Moussa wasn't the reason we finished 3rd. It was a team effort. The back 5 being the joint tightest defence. Harry scoring 25 goals, Eriksen with his assists and goals, likewise with Alli. Simply saying we finished higher just because Mason & Bentaleb is fucking stupid.

Wimmer proved himself and Vertonghen just strolled back into the team. Son and N'jie have not had a chance to prove themselves.

That's true... Basically we are betting on improvements from our existing players. The Winks, Edwards and Onomahs are there for the future and to provide backup.
