I'm pleased the general consensus seems to be cutting him some slack. I'm so bored of these pricks who have nothing better to do with their time than go years and years back through peoples social media profiles just to try and bring successful people down.

He was 15 at the time and every 15 year old on the planet is a complete idiot, I know I certainly was at that age, and he was born after The Troubles were over, or rather after the Good Friday Agreement had been signed, so he obviously didn't really understand the true extent of what he was saying.

I'm not trying to claim it was OK for him to post that, obviously it's not, but now looking back he's accepted it was wrong to post and apologised for it so let's move on. He's obviously not a violent Irish nationalist or he wouldn't have screwed the FAI over to come and play for England would he so it's clearly just a joke in poor taste that he didn't realise was as bad as it is. Of all the horrific things going on in the world at the moment to get upset and outraged by, what some nobody teenager tweeted years ago should the least of it.

James McClean said to be having a pop at a Rice now but he himself played for Northern Ireland under 21 before switching to Rebublic of Ireland at senior level according to the report.

Doesn’t it make him a bit of a hypocrite?

No. Rice played 3 games for the ROI senior team. Rice is an absolute thunder ****.

I agree Rice is, and I think he should have stuck with ROI.

But McClean still isn’t one to talk.

You can't compare the two though. McLean never played for NI Senior team. Rice did.

If England ever have to come here and play in the Aviva I guarantee you Rice would get "injured" in the build up to it and wouldn't travel. He chose the easy route to play for England.

He's a fanny.

Isn't the easy rout picking Ireland? As it is and will be harder for him to get in and stay in the England team than the Irish?

I have no issue with him swapping to England, it's all within the rules.

Never said it's not within the rules. I'm saying that you can't compare McLean with Rice because one played for senior internationals before changing. The other didn't.

England is the easy choice because they usually qualify with ease for tournaments. Had he chosen to stay with Ireland he'd have had to work harder to get to a World cup or Euros. He'd most likely win a much larger amount of caps for Ireland as well.

He's a fanny.

Although McClean didn't play for NI's senior team, he represented NI at various levels including U-21. If he doesn't identify with Northern Ireland at all (and I'm not disputing his right to his opinions), why did he play for NI at any level? Those teams all represent the same place and the same football association/system.
Another point. Let's just imagine that Rice were half-Irish and half-Welsh or half-Scottish instead of being half-Irish and half-English, and he'd been born and bred in Wales or Scotland. He plays a few friendlies for Ireland before deciding to play for Wales or Scotland, would McClean be having a go at Rice then? Or is McClean allowing his Anglophobia to show?

Probably an element of McLeans Anglophobia. But again, with McLean he never played a senior game. Rice did. He played 3!

Still think it's wrong that Rice basically used the ROI as a stepping stone. You don't play 3 internationals at senior level and then decide, hang on actually I might be good enough for England so I'll piss off to their team instead.

Was everyone this up in arms when Zaha decided that he longer wanted to play for England?
