I am not saying that Villa are the benchmark, but it is clear when comparing where the problems are:

The team Villa have fielded tonight:

Friedel,
Luke Young, Cuellar, Laursen, Shorey,
Reo-Coker, Petrov, Barry, Milner, Ashley Young.
Agbonlahor,

1. A leader in Laursen at the back.
2. 3 midfielders who are prepared to put their foot in (Reo-Coker, Petrov, Barry). Again Barry and Reo-Coker are leaders.
3. 2 players who have an abundance of pace and are not afraid to take players on. Are direct and have an end product (Young & Agbonlahor)

In comparrision

1. We have no real leader
2. We have no balance in the team. No players who can tackle.
3. We have pace, but no end product.

Villa are at home to a team doing poorly we were away to a team second in Serie A.
Their chairman is wise however, he keeps the correct low profile and has left Villa with a much better Uefa strike force than Bent & Campbell.

Thats the key, they field a team, we field 11 players!!

We suck balls. They don't.

Also their supporters seem to have extra cash lying around. With our ticket prices we can't afford to throw away money.

They've bought players to do a job not on potential & potential resale value.

I'd really prefer not to think about Villa right now, I'm depressed enough as it is...

Could change amazingly quick

And having success with Celtic doesn't mean shit.

He was very good at Leicester, he was very good at Celtic, he's looking very very good at Villa. There's a pattern developing here.....

I'm very envious of Villa, they seem to be where we were a couple of seasons ago under Jol - playing good football, lots of exciting young talent and well respected all round. You're right, we all know it can change quickly, but I think they have a chairman and manager that will keep them stable for years.

He was very good at Wycombe, doing so well that he turned down the Forest job to stay with them.

MON is a great manager. He has been amazing everywhere he has been. I don't want us to get rid of Ramos, but if we did I think we would struggle to do better than clearing out the whole continental structure and bringing in MON.

Not trying to start the debate about MON. It is just so clear that we lack midfield power to dominate teams. We are too lightwieght 4-5-1 puts too much pressure on Bent, and as Lionel Ritchie once said "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". I cannot see this in the current crop of players at present.

I was so positive a couple of games ago, but I just cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel.

As said before, Villa are the team today that we were two seasons ago with an English spine, I remember how proud it amade me that there was quite a few English players, I have nothing against foreigners I remember what jol said. That you need that strong English spine because they know all about playing at Bolton on a rainy night. Foreign players are great but we still need that English core which has left us.
