There is "genuine concern" Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a flight missing off Alderney.

It is feared the Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu, which disappeared near the Casquets lighthouse on Monday night.
The plane was travelling from Nantes in France to Cardiff.

A coastguard rescue helicopter and crews from Alderney and Guernsey RNLI joined the search in the area around the lighthouse.
HM Coastguard said the disappearance was not in the UK search and rescue area, but it had sent two helicopters to help.

A spokeswoman said they were assisting Guernsey Coastguard with a search for a light aircraft off Alderney: "HM Coastguard helicopters from Solent and Newquay have been helping to search overnight with nothing found."

The search and rescue operation had to deal with worsening conditions as they scoured the area on Monday night.

The Met Office said at the time the aircraft went missing "there were some showers around, but nothing too intense".
"Wind speeds were not too bad - average speeds were around 15 to 20mph," it added.

As the search continued into the evening though, it became wetter and windier.

UK/CI authorities are playing this one relatively safe; French authorities in Nantes, however, have confirmed he did board the now missing plane.

Really sad news, let’s hope for a positive conclusion but it’s obviously highly unlikely.

Bloody hell. This is bad.

Hope they're found but you can't help but fear the worst.

https://www.itv.com/news/wales/2019...tballer-emiliano-sala-on-board-missing-plane/

French authorities have confirmed that new Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala was on board the plane which disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night.

ITV News has spoken to French journalist Arnaud Wajdzik in Nantes. He has confirmed that the French police and Nantes Football Club have said that Sala was on the plane.

An air and sea search has been launched after the plane disappeared from radar in the English Channel.

Guernsey Police says rescue teams were scrambled to waters north of Alderney after the light aircraft vanished on Monday evening.

Really sad. :(

A cold hard dose of realism always puts everything in perspective.

What terrible news.

I know that football is obviously secondary to people possibly losing their life, but what a kick in the teeth this would be for Cardiff City and its fans. They only signed him on Saturday for a club record fee and then this happens.

So very sad. Hopefully everyone will be OK, but it's highly unlikely. He is reported not to have replied to anyone since last night.

Wow what terrible news. Such an important move for him and then a few hours later this. His family and friends must be in a terrible state. Hoping for the best for them all but fearing the worse.

Really hoping for some good news, but with today's technology and the two people on board not being contactable it seems unlikely.

So upsetting. :(
