You said the opportunity to maybe save the plane was closer to the beginning. Would that have been in the hour they tried work through the control issue before they had the first dive?

Yes as soon as they knew they had a jammed stabiliizer they should have left it alone. But its hard to make that call unless you've got a photographic recall of everything in the failure resolution guide (it wasnt in the guide). Its a gross oversimplification but, If they had made a request to descend to land (they were over sea) ,they may have survived. I tried it at least 17 times before i conceded to the instructor that declaring an emergency leaving the trim alone and landing asap was the best answer. It still may not have been enough.

Edit: The recommendation is that if it isnt in the manual dont troubleshoot it yourself. It can makes things worse...

The 747-400 is a big beast. But the overhead panel was designed with flow control in mind. So you work up and down the panels in conjunction with the checklist. If nothing else it'll give you an appreciation of commercial pilots. So go find your nearest one.

Looking at it from a non pilots perspective, my natural instinct would look to try and land ASAP if I had a problem with such a key element to the planes flight control system. Although I guess it is never that simple

I dont have an ATPL so i have to speculate a bit too. But if you combine a lack of sleep/too much flying, pressure from the airline to meet your slot on time, to not be diverted, a complacency for flying with instruments that have failed and are placarded, coupled with improper maintenance its a toxic mix. Especially if your over water...

This is a terrible tragedy and I'm really not trying to demean it or anything but can someone explain the logic of the #prayforsala tag? If you are religious and believe that your God holds the power of life and death, then you have to accept this happened because your God wanted it to. Praying is surely only therefore questioning the divine plan and is heretical. If you're not religious then surely praying has no purpose anyway.

Careful, just like most religions, it's only gold plated. Don't scratch the surface otherwise you'll be disappointed.

Just one of the millions of contradictions and inconsistencies that plague all religions. But that's a conversation for another thread.

It's just a gesture of concern and well wishing. I think in this day and age 'pray' just means 'thoughts are with you'.

The plane has been found...
No more details yet
Yeah in the seabed this morning. Found it pretty quick as the boats only went out today to search. As dark as it sounds, hopefully the 2 bodies are still inside and their families can get some form of closure

People shouldnt be scared of flying. But neither should someone be blase about it.People think of it as they do a taxi, and it just isnt that simple.

I don't. I accept my death as we queue up to take off. I'm not even joking.

I absolutely hate flying. But I love travelling more.

I normally spend the whole flight trying to forget that I'm in a huge, heavy object, thousands of feet up and 1 maintenance error away from death. I'm not joking either. I can't think of anything more frightening than being on an aircraft that fails. Stuff that.

Flying doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think it was because I was six when I first went on a plane and so kinda got used to it from a young age, even turbulence doesn't bother me, I'm more annoyed it spills my drink.

I can understand why people don't like it though.

I've been on hundreds of flights since I was a baby and It doesn't bother me in the slightest. Except once, when I was on a tiny, old 6 seater plane. It's a totally different experience and I was surprised by how scared I was.

Theres a massive difference between a 100+ seat commercial airliner and a small 6 seater prop plane.

Yes very true, not sure how I'd feel in a much smaller plane.

This is the bird I fly at the moment

Lovely smooth plane, 2 seats. You put the power right, point her in the direction you want to go and she pretty much does the rest!
