It's 2:33am UK time on saturday 7th July 2012. The ITK Discussion and Twatter threads have been awash with takeover talk. We are receiving a large amount of investment cash. No we're not, we're being taken over - by one of two arab family concerns that might or might not be the same family. At the same time, Modric is going to Madrid. No he isn't, he's staying. Which has got precisely nothing to do with money; it's all about winning trophies.

We don't know what's happening; we just know that something 'big' is (or might be) about to break. Akqayid has told us (well not us, but his 'followers') that what he has heard is 'jaw dropping' news. Ho hum. [By the way, a few days ago Akqayid seemd like a good bloke who was privy to some inside info. Now he seems like a crushing egomaniac who is being fed a constant stream of top secret stuff that he uses to tease the masses. Just me? Okay.]

200m quid is one figure that's been mentioned. Bearing in mind we got 12 million per year from shirt sponsorship in the last two seasons, that would mean 8 million per year for naming rights if we're talking about a 10-year deal - and assuming zero inflation. Hardly seems enough does it? 300 million? That's more like it for a 10-year combined deal. Money up front, of course, so we can get the NDP finished pronto.

If we're being taken over, I sincerely hope that we continue in the same vein as the last few years. I detest what Chelski and Citeh have done, and want no part of that for Spurs. If we receive a commercial investment that enables us to build the stadium, which in turn enables us to continue the outstanding work that Levy and the board have done since ENIC bought the club, then I'm all in favour. Our growth has been funded by a well-run business model and we have achieved it gradually and 'organically' without the aid of a super-rich benefactor. That, in the opinion of this Spurs fan, is the way that it should be.

If we were to finish the job of scaling the peak of the domestic and european game in the same manner that has taken us from mid-table also-rans to genuine contenders, how satisfying would that be? To beat the (for want of a better word) 'cheats' without having to play their game. How hollow a victory to achieve the last push on the back of artificial benificence?

Many won't agree. Many will want success at any price. I don't. I wouldn't mind the new generation of plastic fans whose knowledge of the club that they would 'always' have supported making 1991 Alan Sugar seem like a Spurs historian. I wouldn't mind the fact that it would be far more difficult to get a ticket to a game - even with a 60k stadium. I wouldn't even mind the fact that a mercenary twat like Modric would suddenly change his mind and want to stay 'for the project'. (Actually that's a lie: I would mind that. If he doesn't want to be here he can fuck off and get his sackload of cash somewhere else.) But I would certainly mind if we 'bought' the title and/or the CL.

As somebody once said, the game is about glory. Where would the glory be in that?

I've followed Spurs for 50 years, my whole family are Tottenham supporters through 4 generations, and I agree with you. My caveat is, what if the individuals/family/corporation that is purportedly ready to invest/buy out the club are doing so because they respect the job that has been done by ENIC, that they appreciate we are a very well run club and that they, as investors, may have a modicum business ethics? What then, could we be a club that continues to build the way we have under ENIC, but have the backing to compete with in the transfer market without "selling out"? Can we be the team that builds from youth up without having to buy the latest and greatest just because we have the money, and instead invest that money into the club for the long term? All dynasties are built on solid foundations, and to my mind (as Utopian as it appears), this is what COULD separate us from Chelski and Citeh! Wishful thinking, yes! Beyond the realm of possibility, no.

Spud, while I agree with your views on sustainable development I have to disagree on Modric. If he changes his mind and wants to stay for "the project" then that's a good thing, isn't it? Suggests it's more about football than money because he'll surely be getting better $$$ offers elsewhere.

I am hoping that this rumour is just plain bullshit.I have been a Spurs supporter since 1960 as a kid and I am still hanging in there through thick and thin. Football was a working mans games and accessible to all and I mean all. All seater stadiums, the Premiership/Sky changed all of that and then the Russians, Glaziers and Shieks entered the game, driving up debt to the clubs and paying players ludicous wages. In all fairness Sir Aaln Sugar did predict this.
I want a self financing football club for true supporters not a club run as playboy toy or cheap finacial short term gain. All around us clubs are struggling, look at Rangers as the present example and Leeds 10 years ago. It cannot go on. If outside financial backing is the only way to gain trophies then we have lost the plot.

Would we, or indeed anyone...
a) announce a new manager then someone buys the club a couple of days later
b) sell the club then the new owner picks a manager

I don't think it's a sale. Bloody hope not, too.

Nor do I want a new stadium with all the trimmings and find that we lose our best players every season, despite being in the CL every year, a la Arsenal. Whatever happens, I'll be happy if Levy stays.

Nice article matey, however the only thing I would say is that I reckon 99 out of every 100 Spurs supporters that you speak to here on the forums (and out in public) want exactly the opposite.

The path Levy has us treading is what we all like to see because (despite our differences of opinion sometimes about the smaller things), it's not winning at all costs that interests us. It's the way in which we do it and and how that matters. It's what makes me so proud of the club and at 31 years of age, such a staunch supporter despite having seen more of the mediocre years as opposed to the glory years.

I'm not sure what I'd make of a massive cash injection in truth. If it's simply for the naming rights and we spend it wisely on the stadium etc for sustainability then great. But Arab investment for shares and then a spending spree like so many other clubs. I just think like Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea etc, the soul of the club just get's ripped apart. Too sentimental perhaps, but part of me hopes we continue to do things the hard way ;)

Agree on the main drift of the article but Modric owes us nothing and if he stays
I will be absolutely delighted. I'm with Boris for a change

Just a thought; maybe this is part of the Levy 'master plan: new modern coach; new shiny stadium; sell for big profit; Chairman retires to the California coast.
Whether we like it or not, football is just another business like everything else.

Have supported Spurs since 1981 and in that time they have never won the championship. I dont support them cos I think they will win the Premiership. Quite frankly it doesnt matter to me if they ever do. If they ever bought it like City I dont think it would mean anything to me.

The 'Glory' comes from the way they play.
