This for me could be our most important piece of transfer activity of the summer... Too often an inexperienced Rose made poor decisions. Vertongan has expressed his desire to play week in week out at CB, and if we want to be taken seriously we need to play him there. Rose as back up, and cup games... Both will have an opportunity to play, and will continue to learn... But Davies is a defender first and foremost. Great to hear Soldado and Lamela developing a bit of understanding against Toronto! I said it all last season it was our fullbacks that was costing us, so hopefully Walker returns ASAP also!

May I suggest that our new recruit is now affectionately known as Valerie? ;)

A talented LB from Wales?
Are we sure he's a left back or a rampaging winger in disguise?

Good business!

Rose will not be backup... he has "desire" to play every game and will not accept being benched. He has expressly stated so.

So to that end I see Rose leaving and with all due respect to the player, I think it would be best. He isn't good enough for where we want to be and he clearly is not willing to duke it out with a better player.

Not disappointed with his desire, just with his comments (as and when I have seen any) that smack of play me or i will leave.

I think all our defenders have made many poor decisions. There hasn't been a single reliable one last season. The unprotected Rose has become the scapegoat and whipping boy.

This probably unnecessarily winds me up but Valerie is and always will be by The Zutons. Screw you Ronson!

I agree that we made a lot of mistakes at the back last year.

However I can't really agree that Rose was entirely unprotected. He had eriksen in front of him frequently who is obviously a forward thinking player but doesn't totally abandon his defensive responsibilities.

People act as though Rose had Nani playing in front of him.

It's not just about 'protection' though, it's more about footballing intelligence. Rose and Walker don't exactly have it in abundance!

Agreed almost certainly this was the most important transfer for us this summer.

But I say sell rose whilst his value is high. 5-7 m maybe. And use fryers as cover. As he has seemed competent when at LB just not so much at CB.
And this comment * is a defender first and foremost *
Hits the nail on the head for why rose is a weak link. He doesn't track back quick enough after a foray into the other half. And that's the attacker in him a major flaw that needs sorting out before he can become a higher than mid table worthy LB.

And I think that's unfair on naughton. Naughton was very solid. And his passing game and I would even say final ball in is better than walkers.
But all that said I wouldn't trade walker for anyone at RB. He gets far too much stick for no reason, I think people comment without watching him and read what the media says.

Agree about that with Rose (although less so with Walker), I lost count of the times Rose gave away free kicks close to our box by seeming to have a mental meltdown if he couldn't get the ball off an opponent striker and just barged into him, or lunged at his ankles with his studs showing.

Yeah this.
I mean vorm who not to be rude to him isn't any where LLoris standards, believes he can come in and wants to come in and compete with LLoris. That's a monumental challenge.
And fair play to vorm.
Obviously money involved too but that's not the point.
Rose the first sign of having to fight it out and make sure he's the top dog and his tails between his legs. That isn't a winners mentality. Because as much as we already all love and want Davies to be successful we all would also love for rose to do just that too. And there is a very reasonable chance that rose if he trains hard and continues to grow could dislodge Davies. But no his mentality is all wrong.
Welcome fryers out new LB cover xD

Sorry, have to disagree. Although I believe that Rose didn't play well, having Eriksen in front of him afforded him no protection at all.

Rose isn't up to scratch as a top club left back. I think deep down, we all know this to be true...

To a large extent this is true however often he left his CB exposed and his tracking back at times left a lot to be desired (mainly towards the end of the season). Having said all that the abuse he gets on here about his general level of play is ridiculous. I for one hope he can put his ego away and battle it out with BD, I think both of them could drive each on to improve and become excellent LB's.

This is exactly the point! Poor positioning and technique are one thing but when you throw in poor discipline and lack of control in the mix you are bang in trouble. Sell sell sell

Anyone who watched the game last night can see that Davies and Rose are like chalk and cheese. Rose does not have a footballing brain, the number of unnecessary and stupid "hands-on" fouls that he conceded last night was ridiculous and an accurate summary of his Spurs career thus far. I don't recall Davies conceding any (similar) fouls last night (could be Rose Davies-tinted glasses syndrome though?)

Maybe the issue is that he never was a defender in the first place? He initially came into our squad as a midfielder afterall

Suppose Rose was offering no protection to the rest of the defence too after yet another fruitless forward run.

Just simply not good enough going forward to completely disregard defensive duties.
