Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid kits brilliantly turned into hospital gowns for ill children
Rather than being thrown away or sold online, a new initiative is looking to donate unwanted kits to help kids

OLD football shirts are brilliantly being given new life in Spain.
Rather than unwanted, out of date kit being thrown away or sold for pocket change online, one company is recycling the shirts - into hospital gowns.

Panenka, a monthly Spanish football magazine, has teamed up with creative agency We Are Xuxa to launch the initiative.
Las Batas Mas Fuertas - 'The Strongest Hospital Gowns' in English - is now asking for more hospitals and health centres to join up to their campaign, which was launched this week.

The idea of turning old La Liga shirts into gowns is to help take stress off the child and to make then feel stronger, potentially reducing their hospital stay.
In a promo video, shot at Hospital San Rafael in Madrid, kids were seen wearing Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid shirts.
A caption reads: "Every day, in many hospitals, children face their hardest match.
"Illness is a scary rival. But it can be beaten.

"We've turned football shirts into hospital gowns.
"Because something great happens when we wear our team shirt. We become braver, stronger and more prepared to beat our opponent."
'A GOWN THAT BRINGS JOY'
A nurse then explains how reducing stress and the feeling of joy can reduce some symptoms.
"The state of mind great influences the evolution of a child, directly impacting the number of days of hospitalisation," she adds.
"A gown that brings so much joy can reduce stress and ultimately shorten the length of stay in hospital.
"Boosting their mood helps their immune system recover faster."

Since launching, Panenka revealed they have already received messages of interest and support from hospitals, organisations and individuals across Spain, Europe, South America and Africa.
Panenka are not yet able to accommodate donations, however, with the first phase of the initiative to get hospitals and health centres to sign up and express interest.
Then, in mid-June, they will start to collect kits, recycle them and send them on their way.

I give you a funny rating,
If my kid was sick in hospital the last thing I would worry about is what he was wearing.
But this is a nice idea.

One can walk and chew gum, you know? One can be concerned for ones kid & still think why the fuck has some numbnuts put an arsenal themed gown on him

Not every kid in hospital is in a tragic life and death knife edge situation, the vast majority are in for routine stuff and dont tell me you're so out of your mind with worry and grief over their dislocated shoulder that your mind glosses over "Wilshere 19" emblazoned across his gown for 2 long boring days as you sit by his bedside

No. I genuinely think it's a shit stupid idea. What's the point? Cheap fabric, is that it?

Fair enough, that’s your opinion but honestly if my kid had a broken finger and had to wear Wilshere 19 I honestly would give a s**t , I still think it’s a nice idea ?

Fair enough - I also wouldnt buy a red car, which I recognize is a bit dumb but whatever haha

But again - what's the point of this (apart from a design agency getting some free publicity by cooking up a useless plan that papers will print) - cheap fabric? There's plenty 2ns hsbd/ wasted clothing in the world to use not just football shirts. I don't get it, I don't see the practical point

I presume the kids and/or parents are allowed a standard gown if they don't want to wear a rival's colours.

It's a nice thing to do, regardless. And helps combat waste, which is always a good thing.

Also I forgot to add that there wouldn’t have a Wiltshire 19 gown as it would lead to a Bellend outbreak with patients confined to wheelchairs and they wouldn’t have enough ?

It's just to cheer the kids up. Being happy can help aid recovery. I imagine that when the child is admitted the nurse probably asks them which team they support and then they appear later with the right top.
