I know he plays for Arsenal, but I still think it's a joke that Sanchez isn't on there, when Coutinho and Benzema are. His numbers last season were pretty incredible and he won his team the Copa America.

Eriksen is better than both Coutinho and Mane. I don't know what Benzema is doing on the list either, because he's playing for Real I suppose.

Eriksen isn't flashy enough to make these lists.

No crazy hair style
No music videos with stormyz
Playing for two unglamours teams in FIFA eyes, No film cameos etc

As everyone else has mentioned, I don't really get what Coutinho's doing on that list and Eriksen surely should be?

Form our perspective I don't really understand people suggesting Alderweireld ahead of Vertonghen who was outstanding for us last season, and in this calendar year, better than Alderweireld IMO.

Him for Denmark and us are two different galaxies. Like Kane for England.

Both are excellent for their national team now. Kane done just as well for England as Spurs in 2017. With 7 goals in 6 caps.
While the Danes are talking up Eriksen as their Messi after his 12 goals in last 13 caps. They are noticed, no doubt about it. Possibly the overall player of the entire uefa wc qualification.

Well done Messi. Undoubtedly the greatest of all time and in my opinion should be this years Ballon d'or, he's been consistently brilliant all year but has been in a below par Barcelona side and a below par Argentina side. It's meant to be a individual honour after all.

That said, Kane deserves to be top 3 for what he's done with us, but he won't be, ironically because he's done it for us and not a perceived glamour club.

How does this work? Is it based on performances in a calendar year and the list is whittled down as the best players come to the fore? Or is it really irritating like the Premier League player of the year where everything is horribly delayed and goes to a player that peaked a number of months before the announcement?

It's based over the calendar year but the winner always seems to go to a team who picked up awards in May.

I don't know why they bother with the list. Its going to be Messi, Ronaldo & Neymar.

This is just a popularity contest

To be fair they are the best three players in the world at the moment.

I agree it's boring, but it's hard to argue that they don't deserve the regular accolades.

Are their 2017 stats better than Kanes though?

I'm one of Harry's biggest fans and for me he is World class but still not sure he's had as much impact as those 3 in the year - but top 5 - probably! By the way, Messi last night - he continues to set the bar for genius on the pitch and imho GOAT!

I know in terms of purely goals Kane is up there but I still don't think he has the all round impact on games that those three have.

Neymar would have been the one I'd have questioned previously, but since going to PSG he's looked pretty special.

Don't get me wrong it's not a criticism of Kane because they are three pretty exceptional talents, and outside of those three there aren't many players I'd have instead of Kane in world football at the moment.

I just think it's important to acknowledge that whilst it's boring as balls that Messi or Ronaldo are the only two to ever win the Ballon D'or, there is a good reason for that.

Maybe not the all round impact of Messi or Neymar, but I'd say he is far more involved in overall play than Ronaldo, who these days uses his energy economically.

Also, Neymar has spent half the calendar year in a second tier league, surely this should count against him?
