He's Everton's level not ours. It's another Siggy situation where someone can look great for another team but doesn't suit our style. Gomes has no goals and only a single assist for Everton. He creates a goal scoring opportunity an average of once every 267 minutes. By comparison Everton's DM Gueye creates one once every 220 minutes and Moussa Sissoko creates one once every 91 minutes.

He still doesn't tackle, cross or shoot and this is in a team that suits is style of play. A bullet dodged as far as I'm concerned.

The real player we missed out on from Barca is Alcacer.

Haven't seen enough of him to have an opinion, but we've not had a goalscoring central midfielder for years. Those stats can't be any worse than Dembele or Winks.

True, but both of those players play deeper than Gomes, have better passing percentages and get dispossessed less than half as often.

Where are you getting that from? I had a look on Squawka and on paper Gomes looks better than Winks this season - more shots, blocks, duels won, tackles won, 90% pass completion, etc - after roughly the same number of minutes (~700).

As I said, I haven't seen Gomes play and actually think Winks is much better than the stats suggest, but unless you're talking about Gomes' Barca form (he was shite for them) why do you think he's so bad? The Everton fans love him and are desperate to sign him and they watch him week in week out.

He played deeper than Gueye today if you watch back on the highlights. Also his ability to avoid two tackles at the edge of his own box started the counter attack that led to their goal today.

He busted a gut on Monday night to get up to the box and put in a cross for their goal vs Watford too.

He has also only been playing for Everton since the end of October as he had an injury all summer.

Those who have been watching him closely have praised him and rightly so. Individually he stands out for Everton but you need to look beyond goals and assists at times.

Modric didn’t pitch in with the same amount of goals and assists figures that Eriksen accumulates. Some players are the assister of the assister as you can say.

Early to judge him yet but he’s going about the right way to getting a permanent move in the PL.

You need to Watch him play. Never mind the stats. They don’t prove anything he’s only been there five minutes and looks outstanding.
How many goals has Dembele scored....about one per year. How many goals created...can’t think of any.

Seen him quite a few times since his Valencia days, don't think he's right for us. Amazing technician with a great range of passing ability but that's just about it! He's very very slow and very sloppy defensively.

We need someone like Dembele who can take the ball and drive forward while also being a force defensively.

Your last paragraph describes Sissoko to a tee.

Personally I think we could do with another player like that in the squad.

I’ve watched Everton a few times in the past few weeks and they look pretty average.

Gomes was ok in those games but no more than that.

We’re a big step up for any player of that calibre. I personally doubt he’s got what it takes or is what we need. Poch always bangs on about intensity.
