Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld says he was motivated to impress at the World Cup to prove that his prolonged exclusion from Tottenham Hotspur’s first team last season was “unjustified.”

Having read the 'article' I wouldn't take too much from the headline.

He wanted to prove to everyone, himself included, that he was still the same player as he was pre-injury.

I refuse to let common sense get in the way of my headline induced righteous indignation.

Doesn't know when to shut up, does he?
bore off now please.....

Reading the article and not the headline often illuminates:

“I was very focused on this tournament,” Alderweireld told British media. “I wanted to prove something to me, show that the period before the tournament in which I, for whatever reason, did not play, it was unjustified.

“I wanted to show that I’m still Toby, same as in November.”

Nothing, not even a peep about being "excluded"or "snubbed". Nothing about Spurs at all.

As per usual, people read the headlines and not the comments, sigh...

I read the headline and the quotes and it still seems to me that he was implying that he should have played more after his injury. Maybe that's just me, though?

"Cutting off the nose to spite the face"

He is better than Sanchez, he should have played more games. We could have progressed in CL further and also FA Cup had he played. Definitely the dumbest thing Poch has done since he has been at charge for Spurs.

He played in the FA Cup against Rochdale and was terrible (granted most of them were but the point is valid) we went out to a Man Utd team that was happy to sit back and not attack, the problems weren't defensive that day. We needed to be far more surgical in taking our chances in the first half and could/should've been out of sight by halftime.

In the CL 1st leg after the cluster-bang of a first 10 minutes we should've come away with 4 or 5 goals.
In the 2nd leg (stop me if you've heard this story before) We needed to be far more surgical in taking our chances in the first half and could/should've been out of sight by halftime.

Now if we're playing "should Toby have been playing the 2nd leg or at least on the bench" to throw on when Juve got a goal back after going 4-2-4, here I'd probably agree with you.

I'm even in the camp of we shouldn't sell him in this instance (normally I'd be 100 percent whatever Poch says I'll get behind) I believe given the lack of miles on Toby last season and coming off a strong World Cup he's likely to be our sharpest player; certainly for the first few weeks months of the season which could prove crucial.
I certainly wouldn't be letting UTD have him. (if. it was an out of shape rusty Toby then maybe we're having a different disagreement)

In a back 3 in benefits us more in the long run to have Dier, Sanchez, Foyth and maybe a.nother learning off Jan & Toby. IMHO

He was fit. The team that he wasn't playing for was Spurs. So the 'whatever reason' that was 'unjustified' was that he wasn't selected. So it can certainly be interpreted as a dig at somebody (Poch) or the club generally, irrespective of his disclaimer that he was proving something to himself.

I'd say he's having a dig, and a thinly weiled one at that. We all know that the reason he wasn't playing was what had gone on over his contract negotiations and the disrespect he showed Poch. ITK have implied that if we knew the whole story we'd back Poch 100% so it must have been bad. That is the justification for him not playing for Spurs and has nothing to do with playing ability or fitness.

so you can believe or back Toby or you can back the manager ;for me no contest
What is it with players like Toby even to some extent Dembele also Rose they get noticed thru the relative success at Spurs and suddenly they want the world and all thats in it ;I say wankers all of them they want out but hang about like a bad smell if they would just clear off sooner rather than later so that we can sign replacements before the transfer window closes
They will not leave until it suits themselves and who can blame them for trying to get the club they want and of course the money they want and fuck spurs if they leave on the very last moment and they are unable to find cover.
Well I can blame them and I do; you have Dembele dithering over a move to inter
You have Rose who wanted out when at the top of his form to Man Unt but making noises that he wants to stay now that Man U have cooled
Toby has turned down a large increase in wages along with a four year deal and as sure as eggs is eggs he will start bitching about Spurs overpricing him. I tell you the place will smell sweeter the sooner these three are out the door
As for Sissoko and Nkoudou they have done no wrong so should not be criticised its a shame they are not quite what we need
