Toby Alderweireld is seeking a new contract to put him in line with Tottenham’s top earners, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.

Can't they give him a smaller rise, a tiny bit of equity and a meaningless title? EVP for Defensive Excellence. Global Diagonal Crossing Programme Champion. Invites to a couple of board meetings to run through a slide deck on recycling the ball at the back. That's how you break salary deadlock.

If the article is correct and he's on "only" 50k a week then he definitely deserves a pay rise.

What's this in the article about a £25m release clause in 2019? Doesn't sound like Levy at all.

I have no doubt his importance is recognised and he'll get the deal he wants/deserves.

He deserves parity with them, he could walk into a £150k per week plus contract at most big clubs tomorrow if he wanted.

World class centre backs are few and far between these days

Isn't this fun? Isn't fun the best thing to have?

I'd say he's certainly put forward a good case to deserve to be one of the highest paid members of the squad, maybe they've interpreted the effort he's putting in as some sort of unspoken demand to be paid more? Like... practically every player, or now i think about it employee, that has ever been paid a wage to do a job?

Interesting...

Sounds fair to me. MOTD certainly made a strong case for him doing exactly this last weekend.

If true, then the reality is as follows: One of our best players wants to be one of the best paid

I don't really have an issue with this

He's worth as much to the team as anyone else so I have no problem with him being paid as much as the others. I'm hoping I'll soon see another of those photos with a player signing a new contract with Poch in the same kit.

Might not be just a financial parity that's an problem ( if it is at all ). Perhaps length of contract is the more tricky issue.
How old is Toby?
Can see him still being at the top of his game for a few more years yet.
Hope it's sorted soon.
