None of us knows what went on behind closed doors but according to the ITK, Poch went in to bat for him on his contract, got an agreement for him on what he asked for, and his 'team' then said 'not good enough'. If that is true I can see why Poch doesn't want him around. He's a respectful man and won't stand for any of that shit. Seems like Toby is back-peddling fast but the damage may be too great.

EDIT; I'd love Toby to stay btw.

I heard all that but according to the mods on this site we should take all that ITK with a pinch of salt. So that's what i do, cos i doubt a lot of is true. I'm more comfortable giving players the benefit of the doubt, because they're innocent or young or because things get exaggerated or because agents are known for being assholes. It's a complicated business. Unfortunately we fans get sucked into believing rumours too much, myself included sometimes.

Sound great. By 31 he should be into his prime as well, best time to release a player for free.

If Alderweireld was at another club and we had the slightest chance of getting him I’d hope we would go all out to do so. He’s quality and for that you pay a price.

Of course he wants to stay. He's always wanted to stay........until the £25m buy-out clause kicks-in next year, when he'll be able to pocket a big chunky signing-on fee due to the relatively low transfer fee.

From his perspective it doesn't make much financial sense to push for a move this summer.

The clause works like this:
He has 1 year left on his deal, taking him to the end of next season.
We can then activate a further 1 year which activates a period of 14 days where he can leave if the £25m release clause is activated.

14 days from the point of us activating the extension.

Just send him to the top of Kilamanjaro for 15 days, have him sign the deal at the bottom and laugh our tits off when teams offer £25m

Yes - we accept. If you can conclude the deal with him within 14 days he can leave.
You'll have more joy locating a crack team of commando's though pal.

Meh. I don’t know what he did or didn’t ‘do wrong’ & don’t really care so long as it’s resolved

That said, he’s been pretty much away a year, has caused a bit of shit - and no one seems to be beating down the door for him to my knowledge.

So for those reasons I think he should get a new contract - but not an improved one

He's on about 50k if memory serves me right. Relatively speaking that's a very low wage for a top player. He wanted to triple his wages (at a guess) but was a 120% increase, which is a decent amount. No way he stays if we don't improve his current salary and it sends out a bad message if it looks like we put the boot into our own players if they try it on a bit. It's overly punitive. IMO, without knowing what actually went on behind closed doors, I'd like him to sign on for 4-5 years at 120k. I think that's fair because we've already identified that he is worth that.

God no - even behavior aside - no way does someone who’s been off a whole season pretty much go from 50 to 120!

If that’s the numbers being discussed (& I appreciate it’s your thoughts only) then no way is it worth that risk. No guarantee he’ll be a shadow of that identified potential imo. If it were me, & one was talking round those figures I’d let someone else take that risk & concentrate on Sanchez & bring in another prospect

He is not going to say he desperately wants to leave - If Manu for instance knew that then why should they double his salary? He has to pretend everything is OK.

If he doesn't choose to leave, then I don't feel sorry for the club. To turn a phase, Levy and MP were happy enough when he signed his contract with that clause in it. They should be happy now...
