A Chance of Glory

Since May I've heard a lot of other fans from clubs like Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd and even West Ham saying something very similar. They'll slag us off before saying something along the lines of "Spurs are going to get slaughtered in the group stage when they face Inter Milan or Barcelona". Maybe we will get slaughtered but maybe we wont! Either way, none of them seem to understand that it's more to do with having a chance of glory than it is to do with winning the whole competition.

I don't know a single Spurs fan who expects us to win the Champions League but when all is said and done, every football fan in the world will know our name and feel the electricity of a European night at White Hart Lane! As the great man so famously said, "It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high... so high, in fact, that even failure will have in it an echo of glory!" How true that is today and that's why when we get drawn in the same group as one of the European giants later, we're going to be loving every minute of it! :)

Fcuk what the rest of them think. West Ham's fans opinions don't count anyway, we made history last night and they're never likely to do that.

We've succeeded in our goal of getting into the CL, and what the likes of City and Arsenal fans forget is that we've beaten them recently too, so I reckon we could give any side in the CL a good game, especially at WHL.

I can't wait for the draw today.

We can beat anyone in the world at home, that's for sure. We'll also be underdogs which will work in our favor. Personaly it was having to qualify that scared the shit out of me, now that we're through I can relax and enjoy it all.

Yep let them think and say what they want. At the end of the day the City and West Ham fans won't be watching their team be drawn out of the pot this evening and they'll be hating every second of that.

We are currently one of Europe's elite clubs and they aren't so it's very much two fingers up to them whatever happens in the group stages.

Best aim for the CL is to progress out of the group stage. If we do that then we might as well aim to win the fucking thing. If we don't progress from the groups but end up in the Europa league then I'd say we could have a good chance of winning that instead.

We're in a good place at the moment as we're underdogs in the CL. Plus, with Harry as manager, anything can happen.

It's a defence mechanism.

I have a bad habit of reading Arsenal forums and last season the general trend was that we were crazy for thinking that we could finish in the top 4. Up until the last stage of the season when it became apparent that we might actually just do it.

Then the tone changed to "I hope they finish in the top 4 so that they'll go out in the qualifier. It'll be so funny". And now that we didn't go out it's actually a good that we made it because it'll expose our thin squad with the extra fixtures plus we'll be destroyed and found out by europe's elite. Also Redknapp will overspend and we will do a Leeds.

It's like the fox and the grapes. Once they, arsenal fans or west ham fans, find that our continued improval is beyond their control. They have to find a way to convince themselves that they actually wanted us to get this far.

Well said, it really does make me laugh when I hear their opinions constantly change.

At the moment I find it similar to England and Ireland both reaching the World Cup Finals. The mindsets are completely different. England go, talking of winning it and are ultimately disappointed, wasting the chance to enjoy being in the elite. Ireland go, enjoy the moment while hoping to establish themselves in the elite and maybe claim a few scalps along the way. We should know our place in World Football but at the same time, look to win each game, one at a time.

Arsenal Mania has a forum thread entitled 'Lets still all laugh at Tottenham' which was started in November 2009 and now stretches to 478 postings. However, the laughter is becoming more and more hollow as Spurs progress.
They would never admit it but they are certainly looking over their shoulders. Worth a look:

Oh how I'd love to get them in the final and put them to the sword. I wonder what they'd find to laugh at then? It would be the ultimate revenge for the Henry years in the league.

I've had an old uni mate whose a gooner say to me, 'calm down mate, its not like you've won it'.

I've already pointed out that its about being in it and that we don't expect to win it, or even get past the group stage. But something else has occurred to me - fans of Arsenal and Chelsea etc have had to change their tune from, 'come back when you're in the Champs League' to just pointing out that we haven't won it. Its a big step down from them which indicates what a big step up we've made.

I must admit I feel more relaxed now that we are in the group stages. We'll take everygame on its merit and savour the occassion and enjoy the ride! As people have pointed out, the pressure is off us now as we will certainly not be expected to progress beyond the group stage. But saying that, we are Tottenham so anything can happen!

That's why I posted this...

You won't beat us. You won't get 4th. You won't make the Group Stages. You won't win in the Group Stages... BEEP BEEP BEEP! Watch out people, Gooners are reversing...

But the ultimate aim has to be to win it, and not just win it, but win it with style. I guarantee the players and fans will enjoy that a thousand times more than just being part of the competition.

National football is slightly different, because you are constrained by national boundaries, so the expectations of smaller countries have to be constrained as well, where club football is concerned nowadays there are no such limitations.

We've had as much success in the CL as arsenal and chelsea, which is none.
