Dave Mackay joined the Club from Hearts on this day 60 years ago – 16 March, 1959. The heartbeat of the team that would make history in the early 1960s, Dave, who sadly passed away in March, 2015, was later chosen by the great Bill Nicholson as his best-ever signing.

Always remember my dad telling me as a kid how immense this man was and for those older than me will probably claim he was our greatest ever player.

Crazy that he was the last player we signed
In the dark old days when the club actually went and bought a player not like how it goes now, look at him, think about it, make a bid then wait, think about it again then go back off an even lower bid, wait a few days then look stunned when club turn your bid down and player goes to another club.

Great player, manager and man.
We have been searching
for his like ever since
A destroyer who can pass.
Still looking I'm afraid.
We've had destroyers who can't pass
Dembele, Wanyama, Make your own list
and passers who can't destroy
Hoddle and Eriksen for a start.
perhaps we should refine our search
and think in terms of pairs or trebles,
though Big Dave played with Danny Blanchflower
which certainly helped.

Years ago, I picked up a copy of his autobiography in Waterstones, a great read. However, when I got back to work from lunch I realised I had bought a signed copy.

MacKay could also shoot. He was reputed to have a 90mph shot, much higher than the 75 mph of Peter Lorimer 10 years later

I've seen many really good - and a few great - players in many years of supporting Spurs. In my view Dave Mackay was the greatest. A colossus. If any of the 'big six' teams had him today the league would already be won.

The best. Sadly gone; but never forgotten.
