6 free headers in the middle of our box

Or possibly 7, I lost count.

What is that about? Obviously a deeply unsuccessful combination between Jan and Toby, neither marking properly and communication not there.

But this is perennial. It seems whoever Vertonghen plays with, the opposition get free headers in our box. Is it him, is it the formation...? Lack of dm? We are just so easy to create chances against it really is an absolute joke.

That is horrendous if true (and i'm not saying you're lying) For a long time i have had that opinion about how easy the opposition has chances in and around our goal area. Last some some of the shots "on and off" target teams had was a disgrace and but for the brilliance of Hugo coupled with possibly some piss poor finishing, it went largely unpunished and it was never addressed, cos i simply don't think Poch can address it.

You need to try and stop the ball in at source, deny opposition the ability to crosses into the box to start with but when they do, as you say, no matter who is in the middle, we cannot seem to deal with them.

Today the first goal imo was a massive individual error by Toby and probably (hopefully) he would never make that same error. All he needed to do was see the bloke away towards the corner flag, it was as bad as what you would see on a Sunday morning.

Not sure how many we ended up conceding last season but at one point only the bottom 3 had conceded more than we had.

Neither are the type who are big enough to deal with a big target man like Diouf. They're good with their feet and quick enough for centre backs, and would do well against strikers who like the ball played along the ground.

This is why I often like defensive partnerships that have a big man and a more techincal player as you're getting a more complete package. I'm not convinced by Fazio though, although he did have some good games and isn't so easy to beat in the air. To be honest, I think we should've gone in for Winston Reid. He may not be a fancy name but he has experience, is consistent and is very good in the air.

jan and toby are a crap pairing. both look great when we're strolling but you put them under the cosh and they can't take it.
They are same type of defender which never works.

Also they both aren't even great defenders which is the other issue.

Stopping the ball at source is what pressing high up is all about isnt it and denying the opposition time and space, so why dont we do it yet.

Usual knee jerk reactions here, the problem was clearly that there we no pressure on the players launching balls into our box, we were never in control in the second half. The free header in the first half was just an awkward deflection and CBs going to sleep.

It's not even that they're being beaten in the air. They're not even there to challenge for it.

I question whether our defenders ever have to cater for this in training considering how we play..

jan strolling again, just doesn't have the instincts of a natural defender.

Good lord that is fucking woeful, from their bloke stood just inside our half with no fucker anywhere near him. To the ball he plays forward deep in to our half, no fucker anywhere near him. Two passes made deep in to our 3rd of the pitch, players allowed to receive the ball to feet, fucking turn and have time to make a pass.

Some body wants a good hiding for that lot.

Jan has always been generous in this department tbf. Never been aggressive enough in the air and he's a big lad.

Poor from Verts but to be fair he could as well as been stood knocking one out in our 6 yard box, cos that ball should never have been allowed to get that far.

Personally I think it's verts. We had the same problem with him alongside Fazio and the guys a giant in the air. Vertonghen is great at stuff played into feet but otherwise he really struggles.

Alongside Dawson was sort of the opposite. Vertonghen had a partner that was good in the air, but average elsewhere.

Lol, if you put bias aside you'll clearly see how the protection from the frontman and midfield was so weak, I noticed Bentaleb try to make tackle stoke player but missed the target but hit referee instead lol then he just jogging and ball watching like nothing to care about, Stoke just have a free run past, even the world class defender will get the hard time with our team lol, credit to Stoke too they know how weak our pressing, sometimes I miss the time when we have player like Sandro always give more heart 100% every chances and you look at some players we have like Nabil he just sub in for last 20 minutes but look like don't have energy left already, pathetic. And I feel it game of who I like here nothing new from you at all, same as me too Lol.

Pochettinho needs to address Vertonghen no questions about it...his such a passive defender.

Wimmer or Fazio should be given an extended chance imo.
