This pleases me so much. Johnson’s take on data from the Villa match:

8 attempted take-ons
4 successful take-ons
50% success rate

That is a massive increase on dribbling volume and his success rate is decent (generally looking for 50-60% ideally).

Think he looked more comfortable on the left? Maybe the fact he had more angles to play at? Just looked more at ease.

Would love to see him just believe in himself more and more and start really raiding at fullbacks. His pace is electric. If he can develop a good ability to feint inside and then drive outside to the byline for a cutback from the left he will be transformed as a player imo.
I completely agree with you. He was very effective on the left. It seemed he was far more situationally aware of when to cut inside at pace. Think it's a combination of his growing confidence and of stuff that's been worked on in training re movement of our other players to create those openings for him.

I have previously been a harsh (but I believe fair) critic of him, but his return is hard to fault.

Also, what the stats don’t show is how crucial most of those contributions were. He seems to always make something happen when we desperately need someone to step up (see palace, brighton, Sunday, bournemouth). I do think that goes under the radar

There's a part of me that can't help wondering if he goes under the radar a bit with the media because he's Welsh. If he was a potential candidate for an England call-up maybe there'd be a bit more hype and discussion about him?

Maybe in the press, but not on this board

I think the criticism of him has been fairly objective and justified i.e. needs to work harder, take on his man more aggressively, make a greater contribution in general play. Those sorts of observations I think are reasonable.

I think where it's been over the top, is where someone has taken basic observations, and not put them in context i.e. he's still young, moving to a new team, has time to acclimatise...and turned them into "and he'll never make it". Which is just weird considering how recently he's moved.

I think there's now evidence to suggest that this season could be one where he beds in, and we periodically see flashes, but it's next season and beyond where we see him more consistently. This is a fairly common pattern for new players, and reason for considerable optimism.

Nice to see him stepping up

Bale and Giggs were Welsh wingers and never struggled with the media.

He just doesn't have many "highlight" plays.

He's doing really well at what he does. Arriving late and scoring goals. But hype is more tied to how much your game gets talked about on MOTD, or how many views you get on socials.

Bale and Giggs had runs and goals that have million's of views.

Johnson doesn't have that glamour to his game.

Been in really good form past couple of games though.

Loved him against Villa. So much tougher. It was like he found his inner Lamela.
Anyone finding their "Inner Lamela" is going to be great.
The only thing he needs to work on is his eyes look too friendly! Lamela scared the heck out of me! Johnson looks just cheeky by comparison.

He needs to ask Romero for staring lessons 😁

Not seen his eyes on the walk back into the tunnel after the game and his disgusted look towards the Villa fans after his goal? His side eye is something else.

Exactly why I wan't him to stay on the left for the next game. I just felt that the option to come inside onto his right gave him more choices and he looked far more comfortable because of it. On the right he doesn't look so confident cutting onto his left on the edge of box which results in him using his pace and going down the line 9 times out of 10. He just seems less dynamic there. Of course he can still be effective in certain situations but he looked more free on the left. Obviously confidence in general plays a big part regardless where he plays and of course it was only one game, its certainly important not to get carried away but the signs I thought were very promising. It was nice to see a bit of arrogance about him.

Obviously it really depends on how Johnson develops over the rest of the season, he still needs to improve on his last performance even tho it was very encouraging, but long term if he can make the LW his own then that would solve a big question going into next season and allow us to fully focus on recruiting a top quality RW in the summer. Ether way In my opinion it would be a shame if we push him back over to the right for the next game. Give him a chance to build on that performance.

Against Villa, he stood cash up twice, going different ways each time.

If he can develop that skill, he will be a weapon.

He strikes the ball pretty cleanly too, although not always on target, but kinda crisp without much back lift.

I think we might get lucky with him evolving into a top player.

Is it just me or does he look a lot fitter now? Before he seemed to really struggle with the pace of games but now he really gets up and down the pitch.

Maybe the lack of pre season then the injury early on affected him significantly and he is player who really struggles to get back up to speed? Lets hope we see the best of him the rest of the season now and with a full pre season, really kick on.

I would guess that what's happening is that some fairly obvious issues are being worked on behind the scenes.

Lots of people have noticed them: attack the full back, be more aggressive, impose yourself, work a bit harder, back yourself

There's a technical element to some of those, but it's mostly mental, and I think what's becoming clearer (because there's still a long way to go) is that he's got the balls to do it. Which I'm delighted about.

He's improving, which is ace

🎙️| Ange Postecoglou on Brennan Johnson:

“He's been great. For a younger player that's the hardest area of the pitch to come in and make an impression because you're usually only judged by one thing and that's your goal involvements, and everything else in your game doesn't really register. So especially for a young person like Brennan, who has come into a big club with a significant transfer, I think he's handled it well at every juncture.

He's taken the information on board. He's worked really hard in the areas we've asked him to work hard in and he's already got great qualities. That's why we brought him here. He's beginning to get the rewards now but that doesn't mean that stops. That's the beauty for him and all of the guys, that it's not about being satisfied with where you're at and if they keep having that attitude of wanting to improve, then that's going to make us a stronger team and them key contributors.”
