James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur have still never been on the pitch at the same time playing for Spurs. Surely, surely, that changes on Wednesday! 🙏

Maddison was not remotely fit to play vs City. He barely even touched the ball. Unless something will have changed dramatically in 5 days, I can't see him starting or, if he does, being effective.
Bentancur also looks like he's played too much football too soon after his 2 lengthy injuries.
We were notably more lively (albeit in a poor performance against an excellent City) when Skipp came on. And Hojbjerg was good for 70mins until he ran out of steam and started making mistakes.

Based on that, the midfield pretty much has to involve Skipp and Hojbjerg. Despite their limitations (cue people saying how stodgy that midfield is), those 2 have the legs right now. Then Probably Bentancur for 60 mins and Maddison for 40 off the bench.

We should have enough to win at home. Brentford have dropped a level this season. Then we ought to have several players returning from internationals and/or recovering fitness in February:
  • Afcon:
    • Mali (Bissouma) play Burkina Faso in the Round of 16 on Tuesday
    • Senegal (Sarr) have a tougher match vs Cote D'Ivoire today, Mon 29th Jan
    • QF is Sat 3rd Feb
    • SF is Wed 7th Feb
    • Final is Sun 11th Feb
  • Asian Cup:
    • South Korea (Son) have a tough game against an improved Saudi on Tues 30th Jan
    • QF is Fri 2nd Feb
    • SF is Wed 7th Feb
    • Final is Sat 10th Feb
  • Spurs' next matches are:
    • Wed 31st - Brentford (H): Maybe Maddison fit to start
    • Sat 3rd Feb - Everton (A): outside chance of Son and Sarr back (and ready to play after travel, fixture congestion etc)
    • Sat 10th Feb - BHA (H): decent chance Son, Sarr and Bissouma are back, but maybe not to start. Maddisson fully fit?
    • 14 games to go...
    • Sat 17th Feb - Wolves : full squad available? (obviously not including the perenially injured Sessegnon and Lo Celso)

It was against one of the best sides ih the world. Tough game to come back in for.

But Maddison was involved, he made one fantastic incisive pass.

He's starting against Brentford all day long.

Id say the plan is to get an hour out of him.

If we are starting Skipp AND Hojbjerg, might as well just mail it in. Individually, they are capable of some good moments - but as a pair, the midfield won't work, imo

Will Sarr be back on the bench as he is out of the AFCON?
I would not think so. Even if he made it back, I suspect Ange would give him the game off given that he went 120 minutes tonight and his team lost. I don’t think he would be physically or mentally prepared for Wednesday night.
