Why wouldn’t Benta be able to do it? He scored a fair few goals under conte, has a massive engine etc.
I don't disagree, but I think he's better as a 6 personally. If Bissouma and Bentancur are both fit and available, then they would both start.

But when has that happened?

That will just push the problem of too many players again to 6/12 months time.

We need to sell more that won't be around the squad to make room, not just loan out.
But if they're not in our long term plans we can't lose the opportunity to sign a player who is. If one comes up now take it even if we need to loan. We can sell in the summer either more time.

Imported with steadily increasing US interest, imo. Along with the phrase "generational talent", which can also get in the bin,

Rubbish, it's been there since the days of 5-3-2, and then the emergence of 4-4-2

As much as I think he could be of benefit in the short term, I think Devine has potential to surpass him in the next 18-24 months as a number 8/10. Also, Donley just has 'it'. Without exposure and more game time, unfortunately we won't see much of 'it and the message to the academy lads would be there is no way in to the first team and the likes of Mikey Moore will soon look elsewhere.
I love a shiny new toy as much as the next person but I just don't feel the burning need for Gallagher.
A specialist number 6, absolutely as we don't have a great deal of possibilities for this

He is a better player than some on here are giving him credit for.

he’s one of the players that I’d expect would surprise many if we were to sign him.

the truth re the value of him….. he’s a young England international player playing for and captaining one of the big 6 English clubs, whilst also being one of their best players this season. Plus add the fact that a sale to us would mean selling to not only one of the teams they are looking to compete with, but also their biggest rival.

this all adds up to at least a £40m valuation in my mind.

which I would also be happy to see the club invest in. Especially if the rumours are true that he is one of two players Ange specifically mentioned he wanted us to sign when he joined the club in the summer.

I think this is where the divide happens, for me Bentancur is a 6, as is Bissouma and Skipp.

To be an 8 in this system you need to be not only be up and down the pitch, you need to be be able to chip in with goals and in the attack.

I have no doubt Bentancur and Skipp can do those roles, but I wouldn't say either is a natural fit.

GLC can play as an 8, and looks to be a good one in Anges system, but let's be honest we can't rely on him.

Which leaves us with 1 natural number 8, Sarr. Hence the need for a Gallagher type player.

Next, from what I've seen of Donley, he's a 9/10. I've never seen him play as an 8, perhaps some youth expert can correct me if I'm wrong. But to me he's the spit of Kane, certainly not an 8.

And finally Devine, he's apparently done quite well on loan at a league one side, but nothing suggests he is ready for us yet. Maybe a Championship loan next season. Also not an 8 (I don't think).

Just to add, I'm not actually a fan of Gallagher and for the prices touted I wouldn't consider it, buy if there is a deal to be made at around 30, I think it would be a decent buy.
Agree this is where the divide happens. Bentancur started out as a CM at Boca. He probably spent more time as an AM then a DM back then. It wasn't until he went to Juve that he properly started playing as a DM with any regularity but he still played as a CM also and really it was was performances as a DM with a number of very costly errors that led Juve to undervalue him and ultimately sell him.

Can he play DM, obviously he can very well and has for both club and country but naturally he is a CM and i feel that is where he is best. I think one reason we have seen more of him at DM then CM of late is because its a less taxing position in that you don't need to get up and down the pitch quite as much and coming back from injury it makes sense to play him there until he is fully fit. Plus with Biss being suspended and Sarr in a rich vain of form it makes sense. For now.

Now obviously Ange's system is unlike many others and positions aren't like they are in any other system. A LB isn't your standard LB etc. But Ange has said himself that he sees Bentancur as player that can play anywhere in midfield "I think he can play as a six, he can play further forward as an eight and he's even creative". To discount him from the 8 position, his natural position throughout his career and one that Ange himself thinks he can play, makes zero sense to me even if you think he is very good as a DM.

Whilst personally i think he excels as a CM who can control the midfield with his exceptional technique on the ball essentially he is a player that can play ether position within this system comfortably as Ange says which in tern means that we can alter his role to allow for whatever player we recruit for midfield. We don't need to look for an 8 or a 6, we can look for a wider range of players that suit the system and ideally another player that can play both as a DM or as a CM. Ether way even if one prefers him as a DM for his performances thus far for Ange I don't get not counting Bentancur as a CM considering his skill set and his history as a player pre Spurs.

For those of you respectfully putting up arguments Gallagher v Biss, Kulu, Devine (especially) along with Donley are missing the point hugely Gallagher is not a 6! Don’t tell me he is.

Devine will be here next season. If we are saying he has a higher ceiling than Devine, I will not even bother to argue that. Donley I said will soon be there. And I tell you now, Gallagher potential wise don’t match him. Conclusion splash out 45-55 million on him, then watch how many of our top academy players will want out, they are not stupid. We don’t have a 6 coming through good enough, and that’s what we need.

IMHO right now Devine is more ready to compete as a 10 than as an 8.

I'm not sure he has the athletic power yet to perform the 8 role in a Postecoglu system, and this player has to be an absolute freak physically to defend transitions in the daring way we play.

Will Bentancur recover this level of physicality in the near future? Not sure.

If that's the case then he's probably better as a 6.

So the argument about Gallagher blocking Devine as a possible 8, could just easily be made about signing a 6 potentially blocking Tyreese Hall.

Basically where ever Ange prefers to play Bentancur will tell us what we need.

I trust him to get it right.

I mean, analysts, coaches etc in the professional game do actually use '6's, '8s' and terms like 'breaking the lines'. I was on a course the other week, delivered by people working for big clubs, and they were adament it is important to use these phrases.

Don't understand why it's a big issue?
