A lot of club players will have a "Saturday handicap" as well as an official one. My official handicap was 17.4 at the last count but played off of 14 on general play. It was because I played probably 7 or 8 rounds of golf a month but only one was a qualifying medal.

Yes that’s right, my old club ran a swindle that has its own handicaps. My club now basically has every roll up as a qualifier so you can play about 7 or 8 rounds a month that go towards it

I've read about this system a lot. It makes sense to bring it in. But it's very difficult to understand I think.

Seems fairly simple from my brief reading this morning. It's just based on the average of your best 8 rounds from the last 20 you've played so will be fluctuating a lot more than with the existing method, I think.

Quick question for anyone that may know though. I read that you can now have a max handicap of 54. How is that even possible if every hole is limited to +2?

Ye but then there's thing about course rating etc comes in to play to. The slope rating or something is what they call it in the rundown that I read. And that effects the handicap too. Hopefully it's seamless enough when it transitions. Apparently the R and A and CONGU are ready for it.

I think that's ladies and juniors. Men's is going up from 28 to 36 I think.

Played last night in some unpleasant weather for the front 9. Hit it really well again but finished with 32 points. 19 points on the back 9 was pleasing.

I'm absolutely bombing my driver lately though after making a small adjustment in my takeaway. I hit a couple of drives over 300 yards last night but the best one was 323. Just short of a par 4 green. Naturally I went for the eagle so was aggressive with the chip and Just missed it. Missed the birdie putt back too but had to go for the eagle. Only ever had 1 before.

4th round on the spin without s three putt too which is a major factor in scoring quite well.

Managed to get 9 holes in yesterday morning before the Cricket started. I hadn't played that 9 before and shot 44. Missed 4 or 5 very makeable par putts. Irons felt crisp and well struck. Driving has gone to shite though, so 4 iron off most to keep it in play. A trip to the range is definitely on the cards tomorrow...(boring!)

One tip when you go to the driving range. Don't just whack balls aimlessly like I see guys do a lot of the time. Put some pressure on yourself to hit targets etc. And also change clubs regularly.

I will definitely need a few decent range sessions...

Played my first full 18 holes at the club on Sunday morning. Yes it was hot, yes the course was new to me...but to shoot 99 FFS!

3 x triples, 4 x doubles and only 4 pars. Probably the worst I've ever played.

Definitely going to try to get out again one evening this week, can't sit on a 26 over par round until next weekend! Fucking game lol

Whose everyone on for The Open?

I've gone for Rahm each way at 14/1 and Koepka to win at 11/1.

Rahm won 2 Irish Opens in the last 3 year's and Koepka is Koepka, but also his caddy is a member of Royal Portrush.

Despite playing Golf (or something resembling it!) on and off for about 10 years, I've never played a Stableford format round. This is probably because I've never joined a club, so never had access to the tournaments/events. I really fancy giving Stableford a go soon.

I mucked around with a set of Ram clubs for years, but this March i decided that if I'm going to play more then I should get better gear. It's amazing what you can pick up 2nd hand for a decent price if you shop around. I'm left-handed, so there isn't as much, but still plenty of bargains to be had.

My bag now comprises of -

Driver, 3 wood, 21 degree rescue - all TalyorMade SLDR - £80 for the 3 of them!
Irons - TaylorMade R7 Draw irons - £90
Cleveland wedge - 54 degree - £18 (barely used when I bought it!)
Putter - TaylorMade Monza ItsyBitsy Spider - £30
Bag - Ping stand bag - £35 (used once when I bought it!)

I can definitely tell the difference in quality / feel between the Rams and the TaylorMade stuff, even if the irons are a good 10 years old. I'm shooting between 80-90 regularly, and seem (SEEM) to have got my big, distance-sapping slice under control. Basically, I'm enjoying the game more than I ever have. I'm lucky enough to live in Plymouth, and have 4 golf courses within 3 miles of my front door (2 x cheap, 2 x more expensive / proper courses). Might even consider joining a club soon...
Where the schmo did you find clubs that cheap??

Great to see people catching the bug.

What i would suggest if you don't think joining a club is worth the money, is to find a society you can join. They might only play competitions once a month but you'll be able to get a handicap from them anyway
I agree with this. I've been playing since I was 12 - 32 years now and I play off 8. But I've never joined a club because I've never wanted to feel obligated to play the same course week in week out.

Woods, putter and bag- Gumtree
Irons and wedge - eBay

The irons are about 10 years old but in good nick. I'll be itching to refresh them in 12 months time i reckon :greedy:
