I can’t understand the love for him, to be honest. He left at the height of his powers, spent his best years giving service to another club and now wants out.

Hmm I wonder if by 'both sides' he means Spurs and Madrid or Spurs and Bale. The way it's worded seems to indicate Bale and Spurs, and the follow up seems to reinforce that, talking about Madrid needing to lower their demands or Spurs needing to stump up the cash.
