And Toby is one of the greatest CBs to ever grace the prem and miles better

In the 16/17 season I honestly think we had the best defence in Europe; Lloris, Rose, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Walker with 'Victor the Brick Wall' in front of them.

Toby will be a big loss, but that's football; just need to build again for the future.

The Roma links are just weird, especially at the mentioned wage. But nothing would surprise me in football any more.

I'm both surprised that he hasn't signed a new contract and surprised that no 'big' team has come in for him; he can 100% still do a job for at least 2 more seasons.

Will be gutted to see him go, he brings a calmness and organisation to the whole defence. We are not the same when he isn’t there, affects the whole mentality of the team.

Hoping he’s been mentoring one of the other lads to do the same.

I have a feeling there will be a late flurry of interest for him before the contract deadline. Clubs don’t need to negotiate over a price, it’s just his contract.
Clubs might be trying other signings done first knowing that the price won’t change
...Liverpool.

Always been my inkling. Ex-Southampton and all that.

Roma: how much you want for Toby
Levy: the clause amount
Roma: we want to pay less
Levy: I'll accept less after the clause expires

clause expires

Roma: so how much you want for Toby now
Levy: 50mill

In all honesty if no one is willing to pay the 25m id definitely keep him even after the clause expires. Whilst 25m is a fair bit, the pros of keeping him far outweigh the cons...

Personally id keep him at all costs - he was impeccable last season and believe that this season we will be better at the back with him than with anyone else we potentially bring in or with the other defenders we have in the team

Sorry if I’ve missed this in previous posts but the terms of the clause are that it has to be activated more than 2 weeks prior to the end of the transfer window. So if he hasn’t gone by the 25th July he will most likely stay, is that correct as doesn’t seem to be much movement other than Roma for such a quality player

Well if anything is going to happen it has to happen quick with Toby. Only two weeks or so until the clause expires.

I don't get it. Why no-one wants him? He would be a starter at United, City, Liverpool. Chelsea has a ban they're out. Bayern just got rid of Hummels. Juventus has old Chiellini, old Bonnucci and old Barcagli. Real and Barca are sorted. Atletico just got rid of Godin. And yet he will make a step down to Roma, with all the respect as I really like that club, but we are probably now a better prospect. They offered him a contract we could probably propose as well, if not better. And he was one of our best players for last 4 years. One of the best defender in the league. How bad the things has gone between him and Levy and Poch. I don't get it...

Maybe the £25million price tag is putting people off. It might not sound a lot for a player, but I am sure I seen somewhere saying it needs to be paid in one lump payment? Which might be the sticking point for some clubs.

I simply didn't expect no one to have offered his release clause by now. For Man Utd not to try for him, despite his age, is mad. He'd probably need convincing to go there but i'm sure 200k a week could convince him

£25m would still make him the third most expensive player in his thirties of all time and outside of the premier league there aren’t that many clubs who a) have the financial muscle and b) have the lure. Juventus, the Madrid’s, Barcelona, Bayern and PSG are the only overseas clubs that probably tick both his financial and professional ambitions, and domestically there’s only City and Liverpool. He won’t go anywhere that doesn’t tick more boxes than we do, and there’s still only a finite number of clubs to whom £25m with no resale value makes sense.

Isnt there some form of big tax incentive for footballers in Italy atm? Whilst i still cant see this happening for a number of reasons, it would make the link certainly more plausible if Roma could pay him top money wage wise.

He'll run his contract out rather than go to Roma.
