Why do so many of our fans have this attitude? Losing a match does not mean you bottled it. Sometimes - and today is definitely one such case - the opposition is simply better. The Americans were playing soccer while the English FA deliberately killed it because it was "unladylike", and were winning World Cups while we didn't give one iota about it. It's only really the last six or seven years there's been any concerted effort to develop the game in England, and this is the first time there's really been mass public interest in it. Winning the SheBelieves cup and playing a very close game against the US is much better than any reasonable expectation of the team at this stage. To expect that we can just show up, take an interest for the first time and stroll towards being world champions is ridiculously arrogant.
I think anyone who has seen the USA team play, can easily see they have had a huge headstart - Kudos to them tbf. It's quite something when you realise as a whole that they took a long time to accept and adapt to Football, Though it still grates me that they call it soccer.

Oh come on the standard is very poor apart from the likes of Bronze and White's finishing.
Naivety all over the pitch
Goalkeepers awful

Got sucked into watching given it's been prime time BBC but I'll not be rushing off to watch a live game or watch WPL highlights on BBC
Disagree. Rachel Daley has been good, Steph Houghton bar the penalty miss has been excellent. Fran Kirkby is a good player. Toni Duggan is a top striker but has been nursing an injury throughout.

Yes we were poor tonight, but we are closing the gap and getting better. These things take time

Are you kidding me?

Yes not all of the teams are on that level, but the gulf in class between the USA and the majority is because they are funded better and have been leading the way for a long time.

England have got a lot better, the game against Norway was very good. I feel that they just lacked composure tonight.

But to say it’s a comedy is extremely disingenuous

All round strength, power and skill combo in that USA team. Plus guile.

Massive talent pool though.

I have to say that I really enjoyed watching our girls play in this tournament and will watch it til the end now.

I'm still not sure about VAR and the offside law I think it should be clear daylight between the players and not come down to who has the biggest foot.

First the word originates in England. Second, do you have the same issue with those in Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand that call it soccer?
Fair enough - I consider myself taught and told. Every day a school day :)

I've watched a fair bit of footie at that level (Clapton FC) and I can't see it at all. I think the US would compete with a Conference or League Two team personally.
A Spartans South Midlands League team plays on the other side of my garden fence so I see quite a bit. I reckon they’d win the Women’s WC.

Eh? He's done absolutely brilliantly. We're miles behind the US in terms of development and athleticism, it's plain to see, and yet we've played a very strong game against them and were a bit of composure away from extra time.
And effectively game management let us down. Wrong penalty taker and IMO wrong substitutions.

I think some of you are being overly critical about the womens game.
It's still growing and improving but there have been some really good players in this tournament and some of the games have been good to watch.
I think the pressure got to our girls tonight.

It’s annoying me because this thread in the main has been quite nice to follow. Complimentary of the women’s game, but tonight after we go out, posters are knocking the game. Yes it’s flawed in some areas, but it’s a growing sport.

It’s like some posters have been waiting for tonight to knock it

I think the standard on a whole has been pretty good this tournament. The lack of play acting and gamesmanship was refreshing.
England were sloppy throughout the tournament, lots of poor passing and positional play, they were always going to come unstuck against very good opponents which is what the US are. The early goal had me fearing an embarrassment but they rallied well & had the opportunities to get back into the game. Missing 3 pens in a tournament is pretty poor though.

Why do people constantly find the need to compare women's football against men's? Not just you but I always find it strange. I don't see people comparing women's 100m runners to men's or women's boxers against men's etc.

The quality of the women's game is improving all the time and it will get even better with more investment.

The advancement of the women’s game in England has been quite impressive to see. England has gone from a team that would not qualify 20 years ago with 1-2 top players to now one of the top 4 teams in the world alongside US, Germany, and you would now have to consider the Netherlands who are capable of winning major tournaments at the present moment. Have quite the young core who will only get better. I am surprised there has been no push for England to host a WC. That is the next step to really grow the game in the country.

For me it’s not the use of the word soccer that’s annoying, it’s that they’ve used the word football for some other sport that clearly isn’t football.

I can't remember any obvious goalkeeping errors in this game. All three goals, the keepers couldn't have done much more

But it's a direct descendant of rugby football developed in America. So it's American football.

It's literally the same reason that football in Australia often refers to Aussie rules football.

Never heard of Karsten Braasch?

I find it strange that people get so defensive when it’s pointed out how low quality the Women’s game is.

How many pages did the womens world cup the last it was held get here? 5? 1? 0?
I'd say 61 is a big improvement so far. I bet next time it'll be 100+ .
So the men have stopped scratching their balls on the sofa, reached for the remote control, and watched it. Thats a positive sign.
