I think a lot of people are missing the point with this. It’s not what RM want. It’s not what Poch or Levy want. It’s what Bale wants !!! He knows his situation he knows whether he wants to play football and who for. He knows how much money he wants to earn etc

None of us know and even if levy and poch want him. Prepared to spend every penny we have Gareth can still say no.

Wow, a lot of hypothetical sweetheart deals being floated, with Real paying half or more of his wages. Bayern/PSG/United will be all over that too then, and they will probably grease his agent to boot.

The only way I see it being us is if Eriksen goes the other way.

I can see that happening, a 2 year loan and Eriksen going other way with 20 mill or so cut off. Important to remember we have first refusal for any deals reached with other clubs, although that might only be prem clubs I can't remember the details but his contract leaked somewhere.

The club chose not to play Bale in friendlies prior to his move to RM, not the other way round. It made total sense for everybody, not to risk a £85m transfer (if he got badly injured) for the sake of him featuring in some pre-season games. It’s usual to ‘dress up’ the non appearance as he’s “carrying a slight knock” rather than the club won’t pick him. In those circumstances the player often gets the blame.

I thought he played in the 1st 1, which he scored then after that wasn't ever seen in a Spurs shirt

Former Real president Ramon Calderon has been speaking and saying that Real are likely to have to move him on via a loan deal as he has no future there and the wages are so high. I hope the current president is starting to feel similar.

No idea if the quotes going around are legit about Bale wanting RM to pay him £17m a year to leave or he'll stay and play golf, but interestingly that is exactly half of the £34m JJ suggested he is on. I wonder if that's what Barnett is pushing for?

I think Levy would be very interested at £17m if Real went for it (that's the equivalent of £200k a week and a £6.6m loan fee, or £20m fee and £200k a week for 3 years). I think that'd be well worth going for if Poch wants Bale (JJ says he likes him).

the link that figure had was 17m per year net, so he pays 50% in taxes out there

Wasn’t it just friendlies he missed? I may be wrong
one of many stories from that time:
http://www.espn.com/soccer/news/sto...enham-silent-treatment-andre-villas-boas-says

people also don't remember him ditching training and wondering around with a matching pink hat with his agent

Look - I loved the guy when he was with us....but let's not forget that he forced a move away and ZZ was a key part of the pressure tactic:
"If he has expressed a desire to join Madrid, then Tottenham should give him permission to speak with us," said Zinedine Zidane, the club's ambassador. "The chance to play for Real Madrid might only come around once in a player's lifetime – and it is understandable that Gareth doesn't want to miss out on it."

Strange that you remember it that way when he played the whole time up to the closed season and held off leaving for Real Madrid until after we had done our shopping as all parties agreed at the time even though he could have kicked up a fuss to go straight away.
no - blanked everyone in training including AVB

If we can still afford this deal for Bale after sorting out both full back positions, central midfield and a replacement for Toby, then fine.

However, I would certainly not sacrifice any budget required to properly sort those problem positions out, in order to fun a move for Bale. No way.

The interesting thing is it seems that the richest clubs are also starting to see the folly of signing elite players in their prime on massive contracts. Plenty of talk and speculation about the likes of United etc going for the more up-and-coming stars which is a problem for us, as those are the waters we were hoping to swim in, with the richer clubs being distracted by deals like Bale etc.

I think it’ll be an interesting summer of signings but very frustrating for us again, due to more competition for that sort of player. Hope I’m wrong.

Seems to be a theme across the top level of the game in general. Barca having to go direct to Ajax for De Jong/De Ligt as it now costs too much to buy them after they move to a traditional 'stepping stone club' like us or Dortmund. Utd now having to scout the championship as they get priced out of the likes of Maguire and Maddison by Leicester.

It's becoming a very congested market. Everyone is having to make bigger gambles for more money these days. Silver lining is that it's easier to hold on to players until they run their contracts down.

I do think something opportunistic like Bale should be considered, just because it's likely RM get desperate and someone gets a decent deal. Like you said it's got to be something on the side, which is how I think Levy will view it. It's something that'll need to run and run if you are to get a good deal anyway.

I do believe we will spend this summer, but I would rather we spent it on 3 or 4 quality players, rather than spending most of the budget on Bale, even if its just wages. No matter what deal we'd do with Madrid, Bale would still cost a hell of a lot of money.
As for injuries, as mentioned in the thread, he's missed 71 games through injury in 6 seasons. But 51 of those games, in the last 3. His injuries are becoming far more frequent, and they seem to be recurring ones.

If Poch wanted him, then fine. I trust whatever he thought was best for the team. I just don't think its the best option for us now imo.
This is of course all dependent on Bale even wanting to come back. And nothing has suggested he does.

If he’s indeed missed 51 games in the last 3 seasons through injury that’s simply too much given the cost, whether an outright transfer or loan. Poch can’t rely on such a player. Even if it is Bale.

Do we still have first refusal on Bale? If RM agree a fee with another club, we have the option to match it.

Yes we have ‘first refusal’ however imo I don’t think there’s going to be a single club bidding to sign him permanently given how high his wage is, more likely a swap deal or a loan with Madrid heavily subsidising his wages.

It's starting to feel like this goes one of two ways: 1) We sort something out for him to join us, be it on loan, free, lay-away, whatever. 2) He stays at Real, plays golf and collects his whopping 600K per week for the year... with the hope that he can outlast Zidane, considering the manager turnover at Real.

What I can't see is he going to any other club this summer or Zidane having a change of heart.

If he comes to us, it will likely require some sort of pay cut. So, we shall see if he's more motivated by money, or playing.
