Delaney playing against us last night reminded me of the derision the link to him was met with in the Transfer Rumours forum last summer. There was a similar response to Lobotka, now allegedly coveted by PSG. If we sign a CM, I think it's most likely to be someone who the SC massive is largely unimpressed by initially.

Thought Delaney was one of their better players. Caused us a few problems...

It really can be difficult to tell who is going to be good enough for a top side like ours - especially when they're coming from inferior leagues.

I just think it would be nice if the angry mob would have some faith in the club as a whole and the scouts in this particular instance.

"FFS LEVY, SIGN SOMEONE!!!11!!1!"

"NOT HIM!!"

I honestly don’t ?
He is being offered to few top level clubs. Accepting his injury record, and with no fee and decent wage, I think it would be a good shout, as he would spend a lot of time on the bench. But top level threat and quality to come off the bench. Or play the off game to rest H
Shame he’s had such a shit time with injuries. Would have done some great things in his career.

You make a good point - some people (usually twitter-frequenting, FIFA-playing teenagers ) always clamour for big name signings but to be fair many of us on here would've welcomed less glamorous CM's last summer (or the summer before that). There are a few capable midfielders playing for non-elite teams that would improve our squad IMO. Lobotka, Berge, Zakaria, Doucoure to name a few that were being discussed last summer.

I wouldn't bet against that prediction - how many absolute 'must have' signings have we steered away from, where the clamour around Spurs was massive and it turned out to be the right call that we didn't actually overpay/sign them? I'm sure there's a few, particularly strikers in recent years.

Sometimes it's better to sign those players with lower expectations all round - not just for the fans in the longer term but equally the player. Sometimes that hype is damaging.

He’s a bit of water carrier type, but all good teams need some of them to allow the Reuses and Sanchos to do their stuff. We’ve got Dier, Sissoko to some extent. I think the sort of midfielder we need has to to have some magic to him to add another dimension to our game.

Problem with Dier is that he hasnt even been carrying a lot of water these last couple of seasons.

It is a puzzle what has happened to him. Liked him better when he was working hard, throwing himself into tackles.

He’s found it hard going this season, but I disagree with the throwing himself into tackles, if your positioning improves you shouldn’t need to go to ground as often.

When you look at our recent results and how Poch has improved nearly every player in our squad, it does make you wonder how much we could actually achieve if he stays and bought the right kind of players.

I believe the right kind of players for him are young, hard working, the right attitude, want to learn and have ability etc. I think there are lots of these types of players but we are looking at a level out of our reach. Imagine how much a Wan Bassaka, Tielemans, Havertz, Werner, Bailey, Aarons, Barella etc would improve under him. There might be competition for them but we stand a chance for most. We looked at Brooks but didn't take the chance. Instead we wanted bloody Grealish and the former would probably cost over £50m now.

We were never going to get De Jong once this season had started or De Ligt when he decides to move. Our chance for De Jong was summer but they didn't want to sell, so move on to the next name. The list complied by @rez9000 (good job mate!) needs to be put under Poch's nose. Hell, if he doesn't know many of them, take him to a few games when time permits so he can see them in action.

Poch wants to buy players who improve the 1st team immediately and I get that but he thinks to do this, you need to buy someone who is young but almost the finished product. He's on the right track but is looking at it from the wrong angle. Maybe it's time for someone like Levy or the coaching staff to point out that Dele, Son, Dier et al made an almost immediate impact but weren't the most wanted. They did however, have the characteristics Poch wants. Our transfer strategy seems to have strayed from what got us here in the first place. Getting PSG's cast offs isn't going to get us much further. No disrespect meant to Moura or Aurier.

By the time the next transfer window opens, it would've been almost 18 months since we bought someone. I worry that we've forgotten how to buy players. Deals seem a lot more murkier these days and prices higher. I worry about the strategy we might adopt this summer as we need to potentially replace players like Toby, Eriksen etc plus upgrade a few other spots.

Jadon Sancho
Sadly he has Man Utd written all over him. I can't see us getting into the ballpark of what it'd cost to buy him. But if we were to give it a whirl... then this summer would be the time, 'cos if wait another season I get his price tag will double.

Would love bale back despite the injury concerns. I certainly think he would be much fitter and less injury prone in our hands.
Just the thought of having bale, alli, son and kane walk out on the same side is a very mouth watering prospect. I didnt include eriksen because im fairly sure he is leaving this summer.
I agree with what somebody said about sancho. His interview screamed out 'cone and get me' to english sides. Im certain he would love to team up with us poch and the english lads as it would be a very clever move with poch's ability to improve and develop players. New stadium and training facilities would also be something an 18yo would be excited to be involved with.

Somebody did meantion that bale has been shown a few places in Hampstead recently. Perhaps the plan was always for him to later return one we are able to compete better financially and the stadium done. He was simply tooo good for us at the time but he did love spurs.

How much would each cost? Bale 60m? Sancho roughly the same?

Crucially Bale's an experienced winner at the highest level as well, which we need

Not sure how we could get around his wages tbh

And if he was leaving, lots of the 'big boys' would be in for him as well

Would absolutely love it though!!

You think so? I'm not completely convinced the 'big boys' would make a huge push for him. He's clearly starting to diminish with age. I can't see City coughing up a big fee for him. Liverpool don't really need him. I can't see him agreeing to play for Chelsea or Arsenal either. So that would leave either us or Utd in the EPL. Much would depend on UTD's long term plan. Would Bale fit into that, or would he be viewed as a luxury? And then who do you drop for him? Martial? Rashford? Lingard? Sanchez? Yes, I'm sure they could make room for him, but I don't think it's a slam dunk as much as it might've been two years ago. if i were a betting man, i'd say the odds are if we returns to england it'll be with us. otherwise, he'll end up somewhere else in europe, such as bayern or juve or psg.

I'd like to see a few young propescts that Poch can work with. I fancy Sess if Fulham go down. He's a versatile attacker, can play wide or off a Kane or Llorente (who I would keep). Can also play left wingback against teams that sit back. Fits perfectly with our transfer strategy.

I'd also look at another physical presence in centre midfield. We can't rely on Wanyama to stay fit so sell him. Berge sounds like another good prospect. With the physical presence of Dier, Sissoko and Berge along with Winks and Skipp we'll be set up nicely in centre midfield. It also means Dier can drop into defence and we still have cover in midfield. I wouldn't even replace Toby if he left as long as the midfield has depth, we have Foyth, Dier, Sanchez and Vertonghen at the back (and Davies can play left of a back 3).

Final piece for me would be another playmaker. We tried for Grealish and Barkley previously so it is an area we've identified. I'm not sure who else we're linked with in that role. Another young prospect for that role though. That way when Eriksen is missing we have another creative player to come in. Plus working with someone like Eriksen will make them better. If Eriksen leaves however we would need another one as well, but someone more established like Isco as a direct replacement.

3 signings for me is what we need (4 if Eriksen leaves). Essentially a Bale, Carrick and Modric in terms of playing style and positions.

Saw a kicker article that Bayern aren't going to go for Rabiot, & Barca are out as well.
