If Poch wants to improve the actual starting XI that will by default mean the rest of the squad is stronger because whoever is replaced steps into what some people call a 'filler's role. But it all baffles me a bit so fuck knows how you peasants will ever get your heads around it.

I used to say if we can find someone better than Son that is what truly takes us up a notch more than upgrading Lamela.

Right now that's a very small list of candidates!

So I get where Poch is coming from. However I also think we need to remember how we got here, and sprinkle the squad with decent potential. Currently we wouldn't be signing a Dele or Dier for example.

I agree with the sentiment, but it assumes that Poch's choices actually do improve the first team. As ITKs have expressed, his choices haven't always done that.
I bet you can't find a manager or head coach with a 100% success rate when it comes to signings. Not every player will come off. The ones you have high expectations of may fall short and flatter to deceive. Those low profile signings might just surprise you in the long term.

Question is, who the fuck does he want? To improve the first team when everyone is fully fit, that will be going after genuine worldies. To have back ups on par with Kane/Alli/Eriksen etc, that would take some doing to get ready made players. Your talking £100m players!

Would really love to know who’s poch is actually targeting...
Really ? To improve at RB we need a worldie ? To improve at CM we need a worldie ? To improve at LB we need a worldie ? To improve our GK we need a worldie ?

Massive over rating of our first XI.

Seems like Poch's mentality is less, "I need Messi to improve," and more, "the devil you know."

Is Lamela the world's greatest sub, no, but Poch knows his limits and he's been coaching him for 5 years now. Surely that's better than bringing in someone like Maddison or Grealish this summer and hoping they're the next Dele or even up to being the next Lamela.

My concern is that our worldies don't have proper understudies. Kane, Eriksen, Son, and Dele are nigh irreplaceable. But I would sleep easier at night had we purchased players to back them up.

Of course. As we're seeing, it's incredibly difficult to sign any willing player that would improve our squad, let alone fit into Poch's system in character, mind, and talent. But it still stands that nearly 5 years in at a now consistently top-4 club in the EPL (thanks to him), he (and Hitchen and Levy) still has *plenty* of room to improve in the transfer department to take us higher, and that bringing in players that Poch believes will improve the squad doesn't "by default" make the squad better, until they do, in reality, improve the squad.

Can’t wrap my head around this “we can’t improve our first XI so what’s the point of signing new substitutes?” talk.

1) We absolutely can improve our first XI. The positions which spring to mind are CM, RB, LB, and GK.
2) There are glaring inadequacies in our squad depth which have become apparent over the past few weeks with injuries, so why you wouldn’t want to sign better substitutes who may eventually become starters is anyone’s guess.

If this is the approach who's to say we won't see a signing in the summer too?

Also, how big is a signing going to have to be in summer to not be seriously underwhelming?

If we sign no one for two windows straight, then sign a kid from the championship, everyone will understandably be up in arms (unless that player becomes Dele 2).

Not only that, we had obvious areas requiring improvement last summer. Now we have even more. How many more are going to have become apparent by July 2019?

Anyone going to bed mildly intrigued by A&C’s flirtatious nibblings from earlier on?

For some reason, I’m getting extreme close ups of a grey beard

If we sign one player then we should probably sign two so the first doesn't feel awkward around everyone else.

I’m with poch we need a top class rb, and cm. our squad is big enough without signing average players. More players like Sanchez and less like janson.

A really good mid-week up to now. Being in Toronto, by the time I get up tomorrow, it'll be about noon in the UK and I hope to be hearing good news on the transfer front.
