Surprised it's Bordeaux in for him though, thought someone over here might have taken a chance too.

It's a good move for him, Bordeaux haven't exactly got a lot of decent strikers, Football Manger legend Jimmy Briand is their best striker and is about 33, so he'll get his chance there I reckon.

Also, going abroad is probably very appealing for young players now.

For £2m, surely he's worth a punt. He can't possibly be worth less if it doesn't work out. I look forward to hearing about us being interested next year when he's worth 20 times that.

Liverpool just sold Solanke for 19mil after he only scored 1 goal in a year and a half.

His value would go up just by virtue of having been at a top club.

I just don't get it:

We won't sign anyone; Poch says the academy players need to step up

Poch doesn't play the academy players.

Dang, 3.5m. A little too rich for our blood. Hope we can muster up some funds for the summer!

Rising to £3.5m so in reality we felt £2m was too much of a gamble.

Of course we previously balked at a similar fee for Maddison and no doubt many others previously.

Our success in the transfer market has come from taking low level gambles like this so why have we stopped now? With the amount of money in the game we should be making a signing like this every window.

This what I don't get. We can't sign players destined for mega clubs, I accept that.

Our academy players aren't coming through, only Skipp, who seems like a solid workhorse but not particularly exciting, and Winks.

Our mid-market signings have dried up.

So surely we need to be signing highly rated youngsters?

We can't do none of the above.

3.5m? Why not just sign him? Even with no intention of using him we could loan him to a Championship club. If he banged a few in he'd be worth double that.

Can't wait till he's Ligue 1 top scorer or something and he's out of our price range.

So if the story is we’re placing faith in our own academy players, we need to ask the question is Sterling better than Maja, if so, no worries.
But it does seem like for £3.5m it’s the sort of gamble we couldn’t lose on. 19yrs old, homegrown, already scoring at a steady rate in League 1. Solanke and Abraham show the sort of value on young English CF’s.

Everyone assuming we just aren't paying the fee, it's more than possible he simply wants to go somewhere where he's a guaranteed starter

great. prospects don't want to come because of non-guaranteed playing time, top players don't want to come because of low salary or lack of trophies, and second-tier players are not wanted by poch. so we are not going to sign anyone until the world ends are we?:banghead::arghh::grumpy:

Or we just have more faith in Sterling and Parrott and don’t want to block their routes to the first team

That whole first paragraph is probably the exact reason why he’s not signing for us or any of the other PL teams who would have easily paid the small fee for him.

It seems pretty obvious that he’s made the decision to go somewhere where he won’t be loaned out and will be assured playing time.

I think it's pretty clear that young players know that getting a contract with a "big" prem club can be a poor move in the long run.

Sancho and Hudson-Odoi are high profile examples of this. You progress by playing not by sitting in the reserves or taking loan moves that have the possibility of wasting a year of your career.

Maddison - IF we were interested in him and he's have come to us then he would have played a bit part for us, going to Leicester puts him straight in contention for fairly regular start.

Let's face it if Maja goes to France and scores a bunch of goals he'll be picked up for a big fee and contract within a couple of years. Come to us he plays for the U23's and some gets some subs?

Fair play to the lad, I’m sure his agent could have worked him a transfer to Chelsea or City to make 20k per week and play in the U23s with a loan to Belgium in a few years, but he's gone off to find first-team football instead. Hope it goes well for him.

Years ago there was much angst that Spurs had not signed Connor Wickham. The club's reason for not doing so was that they did not want to block the route to the first team of a promising academy player called Kane.

I like that one player has thrived by going overseas and now that's considered the move every single player should make. Maybe that one player is just a world class talent who would have made it regardless of being in England or Germany.
