I'd love to know how much we're being quoted for Werner and if it means that we can't do the deal now rather than in the summer. If we aren't willing to do a deal for a top player who is running down his contract then we're going to struggle to find anyone.

All seems a bit messy behind the scenes to me.

It's so frustrating, as we had a better squad than Liverpool last year and they are probably going to win the title after adding a couple of quality players.

We're so close to being on the cusp of something great, yet could fall far behind if we're not careful.

I agree with this. However Im also not sure Timo is worth 70 mil. Especially with his contract running down. We would be paying a premium because RB are trying to get CL. I do think we should be willing to 60/70 on the right player tho, that I completely agree with. Assuming we want to win the league at some point.

We don’t know how much Werner would cost so it’s all speculation on that. He could be available for 55 million as Breezer intimated. The key thing is, it seems buying this calibre of player is beyond us and that is very concerning on two fronts. It means, it’s unlikely we will be able to improve the side any further than we have now unless we get lucky with someone like a Son, but they rarely come off. Or we buy potential like Sanchez, which is all well and good, but it would be difficult to argue Sanchez has taken us up a level. He hasn’t. He’s added depth but that’s it. He won’t win you a league. We need to make VVD type signings and those cost 70 million.

Secondly, Poch gets fed up and walks.

The galling thing is Liverpool have literally shown us how to do it. Just add top tier quality to an already talented existing squad. As Poch has said with us needing to find a different way to operate, our transfer strategy Levy has succeeded with so far, only gets you so far. It won’t take you to champions. We need to change it, but it seems we can’t. Quite depressing.

I hope this isn’t going off on a tangent too much, it’s still instrincly linked to the ITK we have received tonight. Our transfer strategy has taken us so far and it’s reaches its limit. We need to change. Levy needs to change.

So instead of using our transfer budget to sign a player who would actually improve us, we'd rather not spend any of our budget / sign anyone at all...

:meh:

Indeed.

It seems we won’t buy for the sake of it and only on players who will improve us. However, any player who will improve us will cost a lot of money and of course we can’t just spend a big chunk of our budget on one player.

Ergo we aren’t signing anyone ever again.

And yet even though Poch has talked openly about being happy with the squad, delicately balanced team spirit and dynamics within that squad and opportunities for fringe/youth players, he has also talked at length about going to the next level and how in order to achieve this we have to operate differently from how we have been during his first 4 years here.

Something doesn’t add up and I suspect Poch is playing a clever game, as I can’t possibly believe that he wouldn’t want a long term target to be brought in now if it can be done.

Spend all our budget for when? Last summer? This summer? Next three years?

If we want to make to compete at the top we either need to roll the dice on a player like this or in a slightly lower bracket, or we make some bets on some much much younger players. Because at the moment we’re doing nothing and signing players in the Janssen/N’Koudou/N’Jie range has done nothing for us.

Problem is the only way to really kick on is to sign players for that amount. We wont be able to buy established talent for 30-40 mill anymore. We also cant afford to just keep buying potential as by the time they have reached it our other big players have already left and we are in a never ending cycle of rinse and repeat.

Maybe we should change our motto to 'To dare is to...dont." Time to pay big boy prices or give up on the idea of winning anything.

It must be a pain though.
Look at watch Poch has done with Spurs.
These £60m players are the calibre we need to compete with and make our starting 11 better.
Utd have always dropped top bucks on this level of player every window. SAF usually added that one crown jewell every year to the weakest area.
Which manager wouldn't want that.
Poch does seem to have a strong level of loyalty but it could wear thin.

Id much prefer one top player @£70m rather than two or three @ £25m. What does that even get you now? solanke or lerma for AFCB. Mepham from Brentford was £12m today. Gosh does this mean we have the same buying potential as a club with a 12k stadium?

Exactly this. What do we actually think our limited budget will get us?

Werner must be circa £50m with his contract situation and the combination of his age, profile and potential ceiling (resale value), make him an ideal fit. Makes much more sense to me than two more Aurier / Lucas type gambles.

Liverpool sold Coutinho though. They just did a better job with the money than we did with the Bale money several years ago. If we want to do the same we have to sell Eriksen unfortunately.

More conspiracy theories on here than in the Dark web! Man on the moon nah Daniel didn't back Poch, Who shot Kennedy, it was Poch before he was born !
I know if you don't know the full story its inevitable for you to fill in the gaps but most of it is way off mark.
Poch and Daniel are really close and talk every day and are very aligned and have a great working relationship, no games.

Starting to think that Levy was behind the grassy knoll now.

Never doubt your info, JJ, but even allowing for Pochettino and Levy being absolutely on the same page, as a club it feels like we're fighting our rivals with both hands tied behind our back right now, so it's hard to muster any optimism about our short- and medium-term prospects.

It’s just very hard to understand why we’re unable to improve the squad.

Everyone’s on the same page, but it happens to be a page that no other club is reading?

Why is our interest so, so real but the financials are yet so unrealistic for us.

It's akin to me walking into a ferrari garage and having real interest in every single glorious car in it... But knowing I'm nowhere near affording one of them.

Whats the point in being seriously interested if we're miles off being able to entertain it financially?

Surely it doesn't take long to sound out the financial parameters on deals before firimg up serious interest?

We just seem to be stuck in this no mans land between what we want and what we can appear to get.

Something has to give to sooner or later.
