New thought - maybe just maybe Poch is being stubborn here because he does plan on being here a long time, and he knows that this is the time to make a stand. It may cost him this year in terms of short term success, but from his perspective, if he takes someone he doesn’t want now, he knows he will probably have to continue to do so in the future as well.

Maybe Poch is just saying to Levy, “listen, you’re going to have to find a way to get these done. I’m not accepting less.” He has enough good will built up with fans and media that know he is doing a great job with limited spending that maybe he is ok with taking this risk and put pressure back on Levy. Certainly risky but perhaps brilliant in the long-term if it worked.

There's upgrading on players and there's replacing players who simply can't play due to injury such as wanyama or because they've been sold like Moussa! Winks, Sissoko, Dier and Skip are nowhere near good enough for 4th place.

I just can't be optimistic. On one hand i agree that we need to sign the players that poch really wants. But on the other we could not even sign grealish (a player that poch wants and by all means do-able). I know circumstances can change but this is worrying

This stuff about Poch happy to turn to kids, is he fuck. He wants to win the PL and the CL and he knows as well as most of us do on here, that we aren't going to win anything with Kaziah, Skipp, Winks and KWP. At the end of the day, Poch wants to take us up a level, and to do that we need to sign top players.

Levy needs to either shit or get off the pot. We are at an impasse, as Levy won't change his modus operandi, and Poch wants more than Levy can offer.

I know we aren't Real Madrid, but I find it incredibly difficult to fathom that of all the top players in Europe, we seem unable to sign a single one. From the outside, we must be a prety fucking good place to play football. Consistently challenging at the top end of the table, if we were that bad, the likes of Kane, Son, Eriksen, Verts, Lloris, Alli would have buggered off ages ago.

People can say Poch is stubborn, but is it any wonder. He probably doesn't want another Janssen and N'Koudou situation. Not only do those players often flop, its a nightmare getting them out and freeing up space for replacements. We literally only need a couple of top players to have a realistic chance of winning a league title and some trophies, what are we waiting for?!

Is Poch's "stubbornness" really that hard to comprehend?

DL: "So, Poch, we're lining up a couple of loan deals and a Championship player for the January transfer window. De Ligt, de Jong and Timo are being offered more money from clubs we can't afford to compete with. What do you reckon?"

Poch: "I'll stick with what I've got."

Which is very different to, I don't want to sign any players.

To be fair Winks, Sissoko and Dier have gotten us into 3rd place not 4th place. (Agree it’s ridiculously risky not replacing Dembele this month though).

We haven't done much business on januray during Poch regime, have we? I can understand that he feels players should know his system inside out during the season and doesn't believe in someone new can instantly walk into his system. So bring back loanee (Onomah), sign some ex players of his (J Rod - no long term use?) or at best bring in some young player who won't feature much on spring, but brought in more for next season?

Seriously, if we can only buy players like j rod, it is much better to trust the squad.

I wouldn't say "nowhere near" as the players you mention have pretty much put us in the top 4 as things stand.

At the same time how good could we be if we upgraded on the likes of Sissoko or bought a top class alternative to Wanyama while he has been out for the best part if 2 years? That's what's incredibly frustrating.

The stand-off is playing out.

New stadium with no CL = disaster - Levy must back Poch.

Meanwhile injuries racking up = opportunity to get Poch to cave and accept any old iron that's offered his way, out of desperation.

Timo, we don’t want to splash circa 70-80% our budget on one player. Interest is/was very, very real. But, we do not have the necessary finances to gamble nearly all on one player.

If we're not willing to spend that amount of money on a player then we are not going to sign anybody of the quality that Poch wants, so in conclusion we can retire transfers at Tottenham Hotspur.

This is a shame though, he would elevate us big time on and off the pitch

So instead of using our transfer budget to sign a player who would actually improve us, we'd rather not spend any of our budget / sign anyone at all...

The cynic in me thinks this may be a bit of self sacrifice from Poch, to justify to himself why he should leave.

It's difficult to disagree because if we aren't willing to spend the money that it takes to sign the players he desires then that leads us to dam near 0 options and one logical conclusion.

Very on brand for SC and Spurs to wake up with optimism and end the day with a meltdown. I didn't buy nearly enough popcorn.
