I think expierienced centre backs cant be underestimated.
Yes i have alot of faith in our two south american gems, but jan and toby are arguably THE BEST centre back pairing in the premiership if not Europe.
So unless Toby is being an absolute twat or his forms drops til the end of the season, we should do everything we can to keep him.
Also do not under estimate how much knowledge he will be passing on to juan and davinson.

While I agree with this in theory, being a centre back in this country is far more physically demanding than it used to be, far more twisting and turning andcoving far more ground due to the role evolving into a far more holistic remit. It’s why the 26 year old Toby we signed was brilliant at it, but it’s also why even top class centre backs are struggling once the hit 30. Terry, Ferdinand, Vidic, Kompany, all world class in their pomp, all struggled with the athleticism required as they aged. In the 90s good reading of the game and being strong was enough to keep a centre back going until 34/35, but these days they all seem to hit a point where they just fall off a cliff.

If we have four centre backs, then I wouldn’t want more than one in his 30s at any given time, and given Jans impeccable Spurs career I’d choose him over Toby any time.

It was widely reported that he majorly pissed Poch off by turning down the deal after Poch went into bat for him. His subsequent lack of playing time would bear that out. It's also rumoured that the same deal is still on the table but Toby hasn't signed up. Poch seems to have swallowed his pride and given him his place back in which case you'd think Toby might do the same and sign the contract. All rumour I know, but it would seem that all of this fucking about has been costing Toby that huge rise every week, probably in the region of 100k. You'd think he'd just sign the thing wouldn't you?

Widely reported by who though? This is why we need to be careful and not go by rumours because we don't know both sides of the story and the full detail, what we do know is Toby is yet to sign a contract and he's playing week in week out, if he signs then great if he doesn't sign we move on and promote Foyth but my point is that I'm not going to waste any energy hating the guy and questioning where his loyalty is because of some alleged rumours, as far as I can see he's back in the fold playing well.

The way the club is run now, if it wasn't for rumour and speculation we'd have absolutely nothing to talk about.

It all becomes so much more of an issue when you play a high defensive line as well.

And if you 100% believe in every piece of speculation you have way to much time on your hands.

We currently have great balance at CB. 4 international centre backs, three who have been first choices for a significant period of time, with two of those at the peak of their powers. Then there is also Dier who can slot in easily if need be. However, should we sell any of these, a replacement is a must, particularly if it’s Toby or Jan due to their experience and leadership quality. In Toby’s case, it probably doesn’t need to be someone who’s quite as good because with Sanchez, Foyth and occasionally Dier we have several very good partners for Vertonghen, but it does need to be someone reliable and I’d say premier league proven.

Phil Jones would be my choice. Good age, not much left on the contract, English, could play with any of the others and could realistically make himself first choice, especially with Vertonghen finishing this season as a 32 year old.
I took this post seriously until I saw Phil Jones! He’s awful! Why Jones? Because he plays for UTD?

Fucking stupid from Poch today (I'll retract based on @Hercules post). I'll repeat to all those who think Toby is disposable and that we have better pairings where he isn't featured..

4 goals vs Juve
2 goals in the cup semi vs ManU
2 goals vs Arsenal last season away
2 goals vs Liverpool last season away
7 goals last season vs Man City

And now today 4 goals away to Arsenal. We have been mostly shit in big games without him.

Toby is our best defender. Toby is our calming presence at the back.

I'm so sick of seeing him under appreciated due to his contract and can't believe we're going to lose him for 25mil this summer. This is a massive issue.

edit: and now as I'm typing this Jan red card. Great.

The funny thing is - if I was Tobys agent - id ask for double what i was asking for before this game... this game put Toby in a better bargaining position - haha.

People were saying during the summer window that we’d be fine selling Toby and not bringing in a replacement. I thought that was misguided at the time and I still do.

Anyone else heard anything on him going to Chelsea in January?

In exchange for one of their players?

I can imagine they probably sounded out in exchange for that young striker or RLC

But no to any offer. We don't deal with Chelsea or arsenal

Just wish Toby would sign some sort of gentleman's agreement contract. Ie, sign a deal so that we get a decent fee, but then we let him go. I still don't think he's quite what he was but he's still bloody good. Should go to Italy and he'll play another 5 or 6 years at the top level there.
