Really miffed with Spurs transfer stuff at the moment. I know it's only media hype etc, but De Jong, De Ligt and Pulisic are all being linked to our rivals and our name is nowhere to be seen. Surely we can't let all these propects join our rivals? Annoys me that we are always the last club out of the big boys to be linked to any top player.

We don't shop at the same stores as Chelsea, Man City, et al.

The last?? We are usually the first to be linked. And then most of the times we take too long and the other clubs blow us out of the water.
And I'm not sure there's anything we can do against chelsea and city's money. We are not "letting" them do anything. We simple can't compete with the money they can throw

He's not going to be drastically better unless you think Winks is shit.
De Jong is better though. Winks is tidy and keeps the ball moving, but he doesn't place many forwards passes
Except that's just not true. De Jong averages about 19 more passes per 90 than Winks, but their forward passes per 90 are actually the exact same. Winks forward passes as a percentage of his total passes is much higher than De Jong's.

De Jong is apparently off to City for £60m+ anyway, so hey ho. Going to be a hell of a player.
I wonder how Phil Foden will feel, about signing his new contract if this happens. Shameful they lost Sacncho ( and we didnt sign him), and it would be humiliating for Foden if he does not get a real chance to establish himself over next season or so.

And Winks plays in a much more competitive league. Interesting stat.

Completely different players though. De Jong and Foden wouldn't be competing for one spot, they'd be the long-term replacements for Fernandinho and Silva.

I suspect it’s more often than not that we try to avoid the outrageous agent demands to get the deals over the line (which is a principle I respect) and chelski and citeh don’t bat an eyelid. That part of the game seriously needs cleaning up.

Agree. City will be able to make an incredibly strong case for him.

Our only chance, if he is indeed the one we want, is to make an aggressive play for him now - let him know he’s the one we definitely want and bid.

If we wait, or mess around on value, no chance we get him. It really depends if he’s someone we’re prepared to go big for.

The reality is that we’ve progressed to a level where, with the players we’re after, levy’s ‘I’ll wait till they break’ approach very obviously won’t work.

We’ve had poor transfer windows for some time now and he needs to realise a change in strategy is needed.

Have a feeling this one and Ndombele are now beyond us, which must be extremely frustrating - the targeting of CMs has been excellent, they all seem to be coming good, but we haven’t pulled the trigger on any of them which is a massive shame given the shape of the squad and our obvious need

Another reminder that the ITK and Transfer Rumours threads will open soon at which point all transfer related threads in Spurs Chat will either be locked or be moved across as usual.

As you know, we cannot have transfer stuff all over the place as it makes moderating it impossible. Nevertheless, the change is small, it's still only a click away.

It's fast approaching now. Yay.

Sigh :(

I’m sure this is a big part of it.

The difficulty is though that, like you, while I respect the principle, ultimately it comes at a cost in terms of player acquisition

And in turn, I ultimate agree with you in practice. It’s holding us back. I’ve moved my stance in the last 12 months on this. It’s a classic prisoner’s dilemma situation. You take the principled line hoping others follow and you’d all be better off. In practice, others just pay up and you’re the loser.

I believe
De Jong is too lightweight to be a Fernandinho replacement

i watched ajax vs excelsior last weekend and this is the impression i got of de jong too, not sure lightweight is the exact term i'd use but maybe just a bit "soft". once they started roughing him up a bit he didn't seem to deal with it very well and eventually went off, he was also a bit casual/complacent on the ball but that was perhaps understandable given how comfortable ajax were. i need to see more of him before really judging him though, at the moment he looks like a decent player but not to the point of where i'd feel he's worth blowing 50m+ on or whatever it is he'd cost.

As soon as we get linked agents and players start salivating at the prospect of the Sugar Daddy clubs getting interested which slows stuff down. I also think that Levy's reputation preceeds him a lot of the time and selling clubs a very wary of dealing with him.

Ngl I feel like the Winks doesn’t pass forward enough argument is a bit exaggerated. This is just my opinion but watching him I feel he picks the right option passing wise 95% of the time. He keeps the game simple and that’s the way it should be. Whenever he has the opportunity to play a forward pass he does it and he does it crisply. He pings it into the feet of players in those cases and that’s what you want as an attacking player, it’s so much easier to get the ball under when it’s played in to you like that. His weight of pass in every situation is immaculate. I really can’t see any problem whatsoever in that area, in my opinion his passing is superb. The only area I ever question him is his decision making when he gets pressed hard, he can try to do too much and get caught on the ball. It’s obvious he’s got the ability to wiggle out of tight situations but I think he needs more experience in when to do it and when to just pop it off to a defender and reset. When I think of transfer targets I want someone to play with him, there’s no question in my mind he’s good enough for us and I genuinely believe only injury will stop him from becoming one of the best in the world in his position. Not really come to a conclusion on who I’d like to play with him tbh, though if we can’t get the really top drawer players like N’dombele I really like the look of Labotka, he looks like another well rounded player similar to Winks. I don’t really believe in the need for a big **** in DM as 9/10 times you win the ball back through pressing a misplaced pass. We need another like Winks who can press well and read the game well but also has excellent ability on the ball IMO
