Would love to hear Herc's take on this:

https://www.football.london/tottenh...l-levy-transfer-tottenham-pochettino-15283949

In the minutes of that meeting, which have now been released on the Trust's website , Levy's answers are detailed.

"Daniel Levy explained that the club had based the summer window on certain assumptions that some players might be leaving and certain targets would be available," read the minutes.

[Translation: I priced our deadwood too high and low-balled Poch's main targets]

"Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want to sign someone for the sake of it.

[Translation: Poch didn't want to sign more deadbeats that were being touted around]

He felt there were sufficient players in the squad, and that those coming back from injury would be like new signings.

[Translation: He was furious]

"Daniel Levy said that, concerning budgets, the stadium won’t directly impact on the transfer policy. There is a certain amount earmarked for transfers and the club can only spend what is available.

[Translation: There is nothing earmarked for transfers. We've spent it all on the stadium]

"He also said that transfers were complicated with several variables so it was not possible to work out in advance how much you could spend in a given window."

[Translation: We are still operating a zero-net spend policy]

Levy
was also asked whether he was happy with the performance of the club's academy.

"Daniel Levy said it was important to look at this across more than one season and that, on the whole, he was very pleased," read the minutes.

[Translation: Come on, I mean we signed Dele Alli a few years ago - that was good, right?]

"He stated a huge amount had been spent on the academy and that THFC’s strategy was different to other clubs because it had to be. We had to take a different approach in the transfer market in order to compete with other top teams."

The Spurs chairman also clarified that chief scout Steve Hitchin has taken over the duties of recruitment head Paul Mitchell and that he "works very closely" with Pochettino.

The minutes continued: "Daniel Levy felt that a bit of luck was needed in the transfer window. Spending big did not guarantee success.

[Translation: I'm not going to spend any of our income on players]

He said the club could not do more than it was doing, that they had come a long way and that they needed to be mindful not to stretch themselves too far sometimes."

[Translation: Lower your expectations, everybody]

I kind of read this as we really, really wanted Martial and didn't know what to do on deadline day when we realized it might not happen. Mixed with a little, oh my god no big teams want to sell any of thier unwanted mega stars at discount prices.

It's almost like we didn't spend any time scouting sutible targets and just hoped someone decent might suddenly become available. That's foresight right there.

Can we still wish for Ross Barkley?! We messed up on that one, no doubt. Would have been proper cover for both Eriksen and Dembele.

If that is true, then it's pretty inept.

Why on earth would Man Utd want to strengthen a rival, especially at a time when the top-4 spots are so hotly contested?

Is sancho big ? Doesn’t look particularly big to me maybe 5 10”. In fact I thought the opposite in that cameo Vs Croatia. He doesn’t seem all about pace and power like many modern day wingers. There was a moment he dumped x2 Croatians on their arse just by a shimmy of the hips. It was almost Stanley Mathews like.
5”11’ which is pretty big for a wide player. He’s strong too for his age.

Shaw staying probably means rose will stay with us.

I'm fine with that, one less transfer we need to think about.

Still should have done it.

Watching the England game last night, his quality was clearly evident for all to see. A monumental cock up on our clubs (Poch/Levy) part. Even at a combined £ 22 million it would have still been a sound deal.

Still should have done it.

It’s like Levy creates invisible barriers for himself. An opportunity to sign a potentially top class English midfielder for next to nothing, but he just can’t BEAR the idea of paying 7m to his agent.

The DL quotes from the THST meeting are also highly irritating. Poor excuses disguised as rationality, too complex for us to understand.
