Was quality on the weekend

Would have been a good signing and justified the fee which would have been optically large but represented value in terms of on field contribution

Yes , Zaha, may also appreciate in value over the next year or two , we'd have a great new attacking option and this would have encouraged the players in their belief that we are ambitious to win trophies .
Whatever their comments in public , the players won't have been thrilled by our inaction . This is the thing Rose was asking for in his meltdown.. show ambition . New contract for Eriksen is our next task and this won't have encouraged him we are a club going places.

So there's a load of reasons to conclude that there are downsides to this particular piece of Levy parsimony .

The guy is a winner. His attitude is this. He wants to get the best of his immediate opponent. Most other wingers try and beat with skill and trickery, whereas he try’s whatever is necessary - good and slyness and effort. He is distinctly different to someone like Moura for example. I kinda like Moura, so please don’t get me wrong, but Zaha is a top top player. One of the best imo.

I think he is quite comfortable at Palace. Not knocking him but if thats his comfort zone and he wants to stay in it its his choice.
Playing for a team competing for titles is a different kind of pressure.

Well, if we want him next summer it won't be cheap

Second summer in a row he’s signed a new deal isn’t it?

I’d be very surprised if he moves from them in next few seasons now, I thought they were having financial issues and that they needed to sell him to find acquisitions made this summer but doesn’t seem to be the case.

They’ve made a couple of solid signings in Meyer and Kouyaté so will be interesting to see how well they do this season.

Meyer especially will be interesting to see as thought we were looking at in past and he had good pedigree so they could have gotten a real bargain there.

Saw Gards mention on twitter that the new deal probably has some kind of release clause for a cl club - would make sense. Don't see him being there for another year if he stays in form.

Not sure I fully agree with the writing this off thing, for us maybe, but only because we would probably baulk at a future fee.

I think the fact he was rumoured to sign this deal in May but didn't do so until now suggests the reports he wanted to move to a CL club were in fact correct. I trust the info from @Breezer over the summer too which backed this up. Will be interesting if there is a release clause or gentlemans agreement in place for next summer.

He's not going to turn down a pay rise is he?

Fair play, it is refreshing to see footballers remain loyal to the club that brought them through the ranks.

It's not really that thougn is it? These lower league clubs, with their huge TV money, can now afford to pay big wages to their very best players. Up until 4-5 years ago, Palace would never have been able to keep hold of him.

I don't think it will be us unfortunately.

Way beyond our financials.

If you believe the ITKs/media then us and Chelsea went in hard for him this summer yet he stayed without kicking up a fuss. We were in for him a few years before if I remember correctly too yet he stayed back then.

I don't doubt that he is on a big pay day, but players like Zaha and Grealish should be praised for sticking with the clubs that brought them up regardless of incentives.

I think the standard relegation clause is included in contracts nowadays but if he also has a release clause that is somewhat reasonable, we should look activating it next summer.
