You are correct in stating that there isn't really an English way to phrase it. Can't describe it better than you did anyway ('like coughing up flem' )I am also a native speaker, technically the sound is a hard G with a roll like you are coughing up flem, but there isn't really a English way to phrase that. De Lickt isn't far off, but it certainly isn't delight.
