Tottenham Vs Gent: Match Thread

You're the one arguing with people mate, so I think you've hit the nail on the head

And if that's a Big Break reference, you got the lyrics wrong. And if not, I have no idea what that last line means
I've thought we have been debating rather than arguing. Arguing normally involves swearing and the CAPS lock being on.

Either way, you think I'm a WUM and I think it's funny.

For the sake of keeping it football, here is to Sunday. Hopefully a Spurs win.

I was just suprised at the outpouring of dismay tbh. I genuinely didn't realise this is how much the Europa meant. I also satnd by what else I have said.

If it comes off as patronising then I blame the internet for that.

I think this game was symptomatic of so many cups games of recent years, particularly in Europe. This was probably the weakest opposition we've ever gone out to though and I imagine it's been the straw which broke the camel's back in terms of people really having had enough of it.

We got a man sent off in a cup game. No professional team should expect to win a game a man down, let alone by two goals. The damage was done in the first leg and by the sending off.

For the sake of your p.o.v, the thing that has annoyed me more about Spurs in europe than anything else, especially in the Europa, is the fact they still haven't learnt how to play the ref. You need a bit of guile, Gent played the refs perfectly over the two legs. Naivety of a young Spurs side. At some point I hope the light comes on.

Or beat the eighth-best team in the ninth-best league in Europe over two legs?

I don't think this was about the squad.
Well I guess if we can't beat Gent over two legs it is defiantly about the squad. it must not good enough.

We should have won both legs, agreed, and the players should be good enough to beat Gent but somehow it wasn't. I think we just don't have enough attacking players who are capable of changing a game. Today it felt like we were relying on Eriksen to do everything.

Agreed, and you'd think having an Argentine as coach would help in that regard.

I genuinely think that comes with experience, sorely lacking in our starting 11 sometimes.

Like I said hopefully that light comes on sooner rather than later. You'll need that and everything else if you want to win in Europe.

I thought we played well, but didn't get the rub of decisions and didn't put away chances. We were excellent when playing with ten men. I'm very proud of my team.

How could it be stated that it "might be a blessing" by going out of Europe's second biggest Cup competition pray tell? I mean if we can't beat Gent over one hundred and eighty odd minutes do you truly think we will beat Arsenal, Chel$ea of Man Ure over ninety ?

Short answer, yeah I do.

Im not too put out.

An own goal and red card did us in. Now we can concentrate on the FA cup and the league. I am
very disappointed in Alli.

I've just gotten home from work and watched the match (well, up until Alli's red card, at which point I switched over to highlights,). A few observations which I'm sure have been made already, but which I nevertheless feel compelled to make:

Alli's hotheadedness cost us this tie. We were the better side by leaps and bounds and had it stayed 11 vs. 11 I have little doubt we would have gone on to the next round. It's just something we'll have to live with as he continues to progress, and to be fair up until tonight he seemed to have taken some lessons away from what happened last season, it's just a shame that it has cost us our chance in Europe. He needs to be taught a lesson and be sat on the bench for a few matches.

Dier is having a genuinely awful season. He's been consistently poor when played in central midfield, and significantly worse at CB. When he plays in defense it seems a near certainty that he will gift the opposition multiple chances through stupid mistakes. He was at fault in both the build-up to the corner for Gent's first goal (the American commentary correctly stated he was "spun like a top" by Koulibaly), as well as for their second when his positioning was frankly embarrassing. Wanyama has already relegated him to second choice at DM, and if we strengthen at CB in the summer (which we really ought to) he'll be nowhere near the first XI, even if we play three at the back. He needs to pull his finger out, because at the moment he's nothing short of calamitous.

The club would be absolutely foolish to play at Wembley next season. We'd be far, far better off doing a ground share at MK Dons, Vicarage Road, or Craven Cottage. Even the London Stadium, which would probably be awful from an atmospheric standpoint, would at least not have the effect of transforming every home match into a cup final for the opposition. I fear for what will happen to our long-term project if we persist at Wembley. Will we be able to hold onto our best players if we finish sixth, seventh, or eighth next season? Will it be back to square one just as we move into the new stadium? Perhaps that is giving into hyperbole a bit, but can anyone deny that Wembley has been a disaster for us? The club needs to recognize that it isn't working and make the appropriate decision to play elsewhere while the new stadium is being finished, even if that means matchday revenue will take a hit for one season.

Good post, Dier needs time on the bench. The difficulty for him now is that in a flat four he does not get a game and is a liability playing in a three with tonight, the games against Liverpool, and Wycombe being proof that he is often caught out of position or ball watching.

The midfield now picks itself with Wanyama being the first on the team sheet with either Dembele or Winks next to him. Got to say that i am more than happy with that anyway.

Not looking forward to next season playing are home games Wembley. But we are not to far of from being a top top team under Poch.We maybe need a clear out in summer with the likes of Wimmer, tripper,Davis and maybe Sissoko who has be a terrible buy.Keep Jansen and buy a good proven forward that can support Kane when he needs a rest.

Couldn't agree more, the pathetic display in Belgium plus Dele are the reasons we are out. At least last night proved we did want to be in the competition (for me at least). I really was in two minds after the first leg whether we were deliberately trying to throw it or not.

If this was just an isolated situation, a one off type of result but it's not - We have looked very average recently and void of idea's. We really do have a very thin squad in terms of quality outside of that starting 11.

We didn't look void of ideas last night, just shit at finishing.
