Has anyone done the maths and worked out how many more seasons we need to play in Europe for before we single-handedly reduce the number of English CL spots from 4 down to 3? :playful:

I can't believe that some of our own fans can have watched that game and believe we deserved anything other than a win and to go through.

65% possession and 25 shots on goal to their 5. Those are the stats, and then you have what you saw. We could easily have scored 5 on another day.

I'm as pessimistic as anyone when we play badly but today wasn't one of those days.

And how many of those shots were on target?

How much of that possession was deliberately ceded to us by Gent who planned to hit us on the break (same thing they did last week and every team that's successful against us does)?

We didn't score 5. Who cares if you have 25 shots if the majority of them are just against a crowd of defenders, miles over the bar, or consistently wide? We weren't hitting the target, we weren't forcing the keeper to make epic saves. Pot shots mean literally nothing - possibly less than nothing, as they're actually a sign of a team completely failing to break through a defence and create genuine chances.

As I said previously, it's not about the performance, or the stats - it's about the result. And the result is the same as usual, another cup defeat, another chance of a trophy thrown away, and to another middling club who we are supposed to beat and who beat us using a set game plan and simple tactics.

We haven't gone out to Real Madrid or a decent team. We've embarrassed ourselves yet again whilst the main target of our derision, United, have put together another two completely professional performances and march on towards another cup, with another final coming against a very beatable team on Sunday.

It's simply not good enough.

Dier has been atrocious this season. Was directly involved in all 3 goals conceded against Gent. Needs to sharpen up asap.

Not enough were on target but that wasn't a reflection of the quality of chances. Kane should have scored when clean through. Son should have scored when clean through. Those were all very good chances.

We should think hard about using MK Dons ground imo.
I agree but in two seasons time they are going to be playing in front of 65k every home game.
Got to front it up sooner or later otherwise we'll have some press created problems if we lose a couple of games early on and only serve to create additional pressure on what would be a fragile mindset.

My onions are Poch needs to be flexible in realising you need a larger squad when competing in as many competitions, it's fine having a philosophy based around having a small squad at a with all respect smaller clubs and i get the reasons for it but if we have very few options on the bench and if you're in 4 competitions most seasons you need a deeper bench.

We need one player with some nous who can grip these younger players when shit's going sideways, we need a Gallas or a Parker type of signing.

Look back to the Euro's against Iceland when shit went the way of Elvis there were 5 young Spurs players out there (combined caps less than Joe Hart alone) desperately looking for one of the senior players to guide them and there was no help forthcoming and in Europe at least the same thing seems to happen at club level.

I think us fans need to also remember how unexperienced a lot of our lot are especially in Europe.

How much does playing in front of a massive expectant home crowd get to them for example?

How much of It's a mentality thing that's run right through the club for decades and between fans, staff and players it's where a load of work needs to be put in somehow, would it be the craziest idea in the world to get 50,000 Spurs fans into Wembley for some of the pre-season training sessions/games for example.

I can cope with losses if we learn from them it's when we don't that i get annoyed.

Goes without saying we need to much cleverer in the transfer market.

A lack of quality pace up front really costs us.

In fairness and with respect to Harry, we do not have a World class finisher up front or from midfield. If Harry does not score we are truly fucked, and we had more than enough chances to score four or five today but just how much work did their goalie really have to do?

I appreciate what Poch says about building the Club, and creating a legacy but a legacy can only be left when you win a Trophy or three and this current side given any amount of permutations you would put on the field, have not the skill or quality in depth to compete even at EL level.

I await the "we are determined to put things right" Tweets, podcasts, Facebook video, Red Top reports and general banter from Dele an company over the next few days.

From BBC Sport Football:

  • Tottenham have won just one of their past eight matches at Wembley
  • Mauricio Pochettino's side have conceded more goals in four European home games at Wembley this season (six) than they have in 12 Premier League games at White Hart Lane (five)
  • Gent became the first Belgian side to eliminate English opposition in major European competition (excluding qualifiers) since Standard Liege knocked out Everton in the 2008-09 Uefa Cup.
  • Spurs have been eliminated from eight of their past nine European knockout ties in which they have lost the first leg.
  • Since the start of 2013-14, Harry Kane has scored four own goals - twice as many as any other Tottenham player.

Well now you know.
Not really, seems more like people are falling off their perches over a sub par performance over two legs in a cup that if people own up, couldn't give a fuck about ...

Gotta love the ability to change ones goalposts at the stroke of a key!

I posted about my concern that we do not look like winners, failing to win in pressure games. Maybe the squad needs rebuilding but maybe we just need a couple of old heads ... perhaps a top player or two towards the end of their careers who can add the winner instinct into the side and influence younger players
