Always the more likely to happen. As much as I want Orban, Johnson is HG and it seems that we can include one of our unwanted players in the deal - that would never happen to Gent.

He can cover RW and ST and it seems like we're pretty crowded up front with options due to the versatility of our players.

LW: Son, Solomon, Perisic, Gil
ST: Richarlison, Johnson, Son
RW: Kulusevski, Solomon, Johnson, Gil

Still wouldn't surprise me if Gil headed out but we shall see. Re: Johnson - anyone knows how his finishing is?
Don’t watch his one on one when he was out through at Arsenal on the opening weekend. It will put you off big time .

If we can get him for £30m and send them a player then everyone wins I reckon. Whilst I understand a lot don’t want him, he’s PL proven, Orban and David aren’t. He’s not a fancy foreign name but it looks like he’ll be the desperation last moment of the window purchase.

(I wouldn’t be that surprised though if we manage to move a load out if we get him and Orban).

Why is he the desperation option?

So be it. He is young and HG and if we can move 1-2 of the deadwoods in the deal it is what it is.

I just hope Ange actually wants him and has a defined role carved out for him.

He looks bloody expensive, and I'm not convinced of his final ball.

That said, if they want him, I'd rather get him than no one.

That's where we are in the window, and the 'low bar' expectations that we're dealing with. Whoop.

I know nothing is finalised but I had a feeling this would be the signing we would make the moment Gallagher started being valued at 50 mil by Chelsea. We were always going to get 1 HG player and what with Tosin favouring Monaco Johnson seems the only one left.

Being realistic this will be the one attacking addition im assuming if we make it. For me I find that very underwhelming as personally he wouldn’t go into the starting 11. I just feel it’s another rotation option. Decent player but with the loss of Kane I was hoping for something more. Aside from pace im not sure what he brings to the table. I don’t think he brings what we are most lacking tho which is 1v1 ability when not on a counter. I mean, we don’t even know if he will be able to play well in a possession system.

Please no. £50m for a guy who would struggle to get on our bench. This screams panic buy. I'd rather we bought nobody than Johnson.

I totally agree with your points.

If I were to try and find logic other than the HG angle however:

- Born in the same year as Troy Parrott. If Parrott had 19 goals in all comps (mostly championship), then another 10 in all comps (mostly PL) then I think our supporters would have create some buzz around him and say give him a chance. I guess what I'm trying to say is that he can certainly still improve.

- In his comps it looks like he can shoot/finish with both feet. I wonder if Ange would consider him as both cover to Kulu but also a CF in the mould of Kyogo, who has pace and is smaller in build.

- I saw a stat (I'll have to try and dig it up) that over 40% of his shots are on target. I just checked this and see that Johnson had 27 SOT of his 55 shots, good for 49%. Kane finished with about 48% last season, although he had the most shots and SOT in the league (63 SOT, 130 Shots).

So it's possible our scouting team in combination with what Ange wants sees something there? But trust me, I totally get your points. I wanted and expected more, and although he's always looked an exciting player to me, I haven't seen much worse FBref charts before! haha

I think this is fair comment. I'd argue he won't start, which means our first XI isn't getting stronger. For that money, you'd really want it to.

This screams panic buy.

I don't disagree

I'd rather we bought nobody than Johnson.

I might stop short there though. For the right price, it might still make sense.

I'm just far from convinced

Johnson has some nice attributes but clearly he will need to step up his game if he’s going to contribute here. Ange has made a career out of getting players to step up like that, so if this is who he wants than I’ll back him 100%.

But Ange better f***ing want him.

It's better for us to wait for the right player to become available. We should have no worries about HG if we get players out. If we are prepared to spend this kind of money, i'd rather see if Arsenal would take £50m for Balogun who is much more promising.

When we cant get anyone else because we have left it too late. I'm not against his purchase as most people BTW, which I reflect in the rest of the post. I've been defending him quite a bit the last weeks. Does the manager want him, let's see what he says if he comes.

Totally agree. Imagine if, at the outset of the window, someone had told you that'd we'd sell Kane and that our big-money signing would be someone to compete against Perisic, Gil, and Solomon for appearances as a substitute and in domestic cups. And that the sole reason we bought him was because the club had fucked up the HG situation. We'd all have be apoplectic.

It'd be a bit like Frazier Campbell, except instead of a loan the substandard replacement would be brought in on the club's fourth-highest ever transfer fee. A complete fiasco.

If the HG situation is the reason we're in for him, the club simply needs to get more creative.

I mean Lingard is HG and whilst he's not better than Johnson, he would end up fulfilling the same remit. Unless the scouts see him having a transformation in a different position in a new system (which would be a massive risk in itself), I honestly think Johnson will end up playing about 3-4 times for us when Ange sees Solomon, Gil and Perisic having more of an impact from the bench.

Can we stop saying this about every signing we don’t like? It’s complete self-justifying fiction.
if a credible source says otherwise then fair enough and I would be on board with it. we can't have another deadwood that we cannot shift next season like Rodon and Spence

He's not an opportunistic buy at that price though is he? Forest will have to replace as well which will hold things up.
Our recruitment has been much better recently, we're just hamstrung by decisions made under Poch, Mourinho, Conte and Hitchen
