Someone correct me, but I believe that's because in Spain, technically the player buys himself out of his contract and the purchasing player transfers the cash to him. Because he will have a tax bill on what is effectively his extraordinary income, they have to make the additional payment to the player to offset that
Is that also true in Portugal?

Ali Gold's thoughts on it

"Spurs will look to bring in a new attacking player this month, although links with former academy star Marcus Edwards are believed to be wide of the mark at this current stage of the transfer window.

The 24-year-old has been making a name for himself in Portugal with Sporting and in the Champions League, including scoring against Spurs in a campaign that has brought nine goals and nine assists in 24 games.

However, despite impressing, the 5ft 5ins Edwards does not tick many of the boxes for a Conte-style player with his stature, while his inconsistent training levels - criticised at times during his academy years at Spurs and mentioned this season by his current boss Ruben Amorim - would not go down well with Conte."

I've seen the Amorim quotes, but I don't think they're an issue at all. It's worth remembering that when Slimani, a player who returned to some fanfare and decent success early on in a position that Sporting really needed at the time, showed an attitude and lack of effort in training Amorim shipped him out almost straight away. He wouldn't be putting up with anything from Edwards, and I'm confident what he said was purely motivational.
Strange though that it is pretty much what I have heard and that came from his agent via a friend of mine. Quite the coincidence in fact.

Sporting have said both are available at their release clauses.

For Edwards, that works out to about £26M after factoring in our 50% sell on fee
Yeh I know, what I mean is that assuming Porro was always on the list and the fee for just him was £40m, then we're effectively paying £26m for Edwards, regardless of whatever splits come out in the press later on.

Has Paratici left the club? I thought he was meant to be in charge of all footballing matters including transfer negotiations. When he arrived the club were putting his face forward on multiple occasions. Seems completely absent now. I can't even remember Conte referring him to recently.
Could be keeping a bit of a low public profile because of al the Juve stuff right now.

AG is not exactly accurate. There has certainly been engaged conversations. Does not mean it will develop into a deal though. We all know about his attitude. Probably some DD been taking place.

He also plays down Porro again, reiterating the same thing he said before about concerns over his physicality. Its hard to tell if he actually knows something or just grasping at thin air a little bit with old info. It wouldn't surprise me if Edwards in particular was a back up option and nothing more but again, much like this time last year, buying two players from one club both in positions we are looking for certainly seems like it could happen quickly and sort of out of the blue (at least in Edwards case)

If it's already going to be a protracted negotiation getting Levy on it makes sense, same thing as with Spence in the summer. Frees Paratici up to do other signings & gives Levy something to keep him busy. Also I'd imagine it might help to make the other club feel a bit more important as they're dealing with the Chairman.

That's fine. I'm just saying that Amorim isn't the type to put up with attitudes or problem children, so it's strange that he continues to play him.

This is what I am receiving. Last couple months he has been spot on in attitude and the rest. Has personal trainer (I think). He is prepared to have a live in one like Richy, to help him. He feels he has not fulfilled his dream here, and his family would love it to happen. The fee is a good one for us, due to the sell-on. It is felt that him and Porro are unplayable together. I’m hearing Conté fancies the idea, and calls it ‘low risk’ as we have Kulu and Gil. And feels with vibrant youth around the team and squad will give good energy. He wants to play 352, with technical players. He also like Harvey White. I I know not for this thread. But there you have it. Not a cert may I add. But definitely talking, led by Levy on this one.
Seems like a much more flexible formation 3-5-2. its one which utilises the players we have and is far less reliant on having ultra elite wing-backs
