The measures mean that Abramovich cannot sell Chelsea or invest in the club. The 55-year-old put the club up for sale last week and had been hoping for a deal to go through quickly. There has been interest in the club from several parties.

Chelsea, who were bought by Abramovich in 2003, now face an uncertain future. The European champions have been given a special licence to continue operating, but they will do so with restrictions hanging over them. They cannot sell any more tickets, no merchandise sales are allowed and they cannot sign players or hand out new contracts. Season ticket holders are allowed to attend games and catering services will be permitted.

This is funny

So I have a question, perhaps a legal question, on what basis can someone be sanctioned? i.e. I am presuming they must have evidence of Abramovich's dealings but how can someone be sanctioned if he has had no role in the war and we may dislike Abramovich and hate Chelscum but being pally with someone doesnt exactly scream guilty

More on this from BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan.

Assets seized includes Chelsea FC.

Premier League was informed 15 minutes before it was announced.

The Government are putting in place a licence to ensure the club can fulfil its fixtures, staff and players can be paid, and as a significant cultural asset that it can continue.

This is about Roman Abramovich not being able to make any money or benefit from Chelsea FC.

Season ticket holders can still attend games they have tickets for but club can not now sell any more tickets that haven’t been sold already

The merchandise shop will be closed.
so does that mean that future cup ties for which no tickets have been sold outs now be played with no fans??

Couldn't happen to a nicer club or a nicer bunch of fans :)

Season ticket holders can attend. But I presume they cannot sell season tickets for next season. They are really screwed.

If these restrictions stay in place without review they'll go bust within weeks, surely?

Where do they get the money to pay first team players? Or anything, actually.

No revenue, no borrowing, no transactions with other businesses.

Chelsea been given a special licence to continue trading. This could get interesting.
Expected, and completely understandable though. The fact is he can't put any more money in whatever happens and that was as much as we could ask for imo.

You’d assume there’s a pool of money from existing revenues, sponsors, merchandise, tickets etc to use…but after that, the well would be dry?!

Well I assume they are still getting their cut of TV money and will still be getting sponsorship money, plus they've already sold season tickets so they will have that money in reserve.

So they can keep going in the short term. No idea how this ends long term though!

I have zero sympathy for their fans. Lived with the benefits of an oligarch for 20 years, now have to deal with the other side of that relationship.

but for cup ties you only have 3 or 4 games included in the season ticket - once you've passed that number season ticket holders have to buy your seat ??

Must mean that for they then have to play with no fans if drawn at home, surely?

If they get to the FA cup semi-final or final, half the ground will be empty??

Fa Cup Semi/final issued by FA. So think they might be able to attend those, but otherwise can’t go additional games….unless club let them in for free

Agree... and again... some fans might not be satisfied with all that ENIC and Levy do... but at least we are in good hands.

They'll have to significantly push up the prices of their sausage rolls, but I'm not sure it's going to cover it
Can’t sell food or drink anymore if club own the catering and benefit from the income
