This is how false narratives are born. It sounds plausible so let's pretend it's true even though there is absolutely no way of us knowing what Conte was thinking at the time or what the discussions between him and our board were.

You're free to believe Conte wanted the summer off, at the time there were reports of "lack of ambition" and now he has the job he's not going to confirm that, is he?

I also assume you believe that Conte hasn't spoken to the board about possible January signings?

I don't believe anything of the sort and haven't said anything of the sort.

I say I don't know because I don't know. You don't know either but seem to think your guess is a fact.

Fair enough, I guess I took the "Conte said he wanted the summer off" as you believing it.

I'm just basing my guess off the ITK, reports at the time and our history of doing business.

I quoted that as a possibility and a sign that reports about him not getting what he wanted in the summer are not factual. Both stories are plausible and possibly both partly true.

I’m surprised given the amount of conversations he must have had with Conte that he hasn’t had something lined up for the first week.

Why? Has any other top 6 clubs lined up deals?

Lets be honest, we are in a bit more need than they are it seems. Perhaps Man United are the ones who are in real need of squad improvements as much as we need. We are in a good position in the league but the second half of the season we are facing some horrible away games and a backlog of games which could be further exacerbated by the FA Cup run we are embarking on

None of that changes the availability of the quality of players we want.

Not really sure how that’s relevant as none have same situation as us. We brought in a new Dof in summer he’s had 6 months to access situation, he’s got the new manager he wanted who’s he’s very close with. I’m not saying he’s failed by not getting at least 1 in early, I’m just saying given the scenario I’m surprised.

Who's to say we haven't lined up deals? Unless a player is being pushed for an exit, or being sold for above market value, then negotiations will be difficult. Especially in January when clubs don't want to lose their best players mid-season. We know who our targets are and we will get them in as soon as we can finalise an acceptable deal.

Vlahovic for example - on incredible form with 16 goals this season compared to Fiorentina's next best scorer is on just 2 goals. They're in the hunt to get back into Europe and Vlahovic is dragging them there. Do you think Fiorentina will want to sell him as soon as the January window opens?

It's very relevant. If players of the quality we want are not available in January then we either buy no one or replace our dross with more dross.

Our biggest mistake in the transfer market is not strengthening when we are in a good position and just general poor signings.

I really don't like the argument that because we have current weaknesses we should buy whatever we can get our hands on. Doing this only increases our problems.

Not neccessarily a Paratici issue with signings its been a club issue for few years now.

Incomings and approx amount in last 3 seasons

Romero Loan (£42.5m)
Emerson £25m
Gil £21m + Lamela
Bergwijn £25m
Sessegnon £25m
Ndombele £55m
Lo Celso £42m
Reguilon £27m
Doherty £15m
Hojbjerg £15m
Rodon £11m

Approx £300m has been spent. I'd say Romero, Hojbjerg, Rodon & maybe Regi look like justifying the pricetags. Gil needs time.

I was buzzing with excitement at Paratici but so far his incomings look questionable. However he probably got us one of the top 3 managers in the world in my opinion so who knows.

My point is, the recruitment and the scouts and teams at the club have simply not been good enough and I truly hope Paratici is changing this.

Maybe he has but the selling clubs still need to play ball.

Paratici is especially adept at lining up free transfers and is renowned for building relationships with players, their families and their agents, over several years ahead of such a move. As such, I imagine we will see moves for free transfers from Itay this summer... and there is some real quality available. The draw of playing for Conte, our world class training facilities and stadium, and Paratici's relationship building should see us aim very high. These players would improve us massively and allow us to play Conte's system more effectively.

De Vriij (free)
Romagnoli (free)
Brozovic (free)
Eriksen (free - controversial I know, but if fit again he offers exactly what we need and knows Conte's system)

If the players they replace in the squad - Sanchez, Rodon, Winks, Ndombele - bring in fees (£80M+ combined) we will be in very good shape financially, and can help fund a move for a marquee signing like Vlahovic.

De Vrij isn't free this summer. He's out of contract Summer 2023.

All talk the talk, no walk the walk. He seems busiest when the window is shut yet there's no movement when half of the window has passed. Genuinely appalled.
