I'll be stunned if he doesn't play vs City. If that happens then there might be a problem.

Jan Vertonghen dropped against Aston Villa because of his fitness levels and pre-season. Pochettino wanted to make a statement . More @TimesSport

Makes sense. If we want to challenge for the title we need all players performing at their maximum. If the squad see that a player of Vertonghens regard can be dropped due to poor attitude in training and pre-season it keeps everyone on their toes and will actually give Vertonghen himself a kick up the backside. It's good man management.

Poch made a point in his post match presser about some players enjoying their holidays too much, and returning for pre season less fit than they should be. He even asked Jesus to explain what he meant in his better English. He never mentioned anyone by name and said he was talking in general.

Didn't Poch do exactly the same thing with Toby for the first game last season?
He then went on to play shitloads of games so I reckon it's a good decision by Poch, whether or not it's Jan scoffing too many burgers on his hols, or just as he's getting older means it takes him longer to get back in shape.
Kinda relieved its down to his fitness tbh, and not some of the wild theories that have been floated on here over the last few days.

Also means he’s more likely to pick up an injury if his general fitness levels aren’t up to scratch.

Hopefully a full week of good training will see him back on Saturday.

Although there is a lot of positivity at our club, does anybody agree that there is something unsettling behind the scenes with Toby, Jan and Eriksen problems? Everything used to be so posotive, especially at WHL, but the manager and a few players seem to be unsettled suggesting all is not well

I have seen nothing from reliable sources to suggest the manager is unsettled. The three players are all coming towards the end of their current contracts, and their next contracts are most likely their last opportunity to pad out their pensions, so they are bound to be looking out for their own best interests.

To be honest, i'd much rather it was this way then all happy families. SAF was the best manager of my generation, United always had some things going on with players / coaching staff throughout his tenure. I'd be more annoyed if everyone was happy families at our place whilst we still haven't won anything. Poch is slowly installing that winning mentality, yes i love Verts. But if he has come back from pre-season and been slacking he can't just live off reputation and our senior players need to see Poch taking charge here.

Same with Eriksen and Toby, if they think they will do better leaving us, then so be it. We shouldn't beg and plead for them to stay, we are a huge club and love how Poch handles the players now. He has to install this slight fear that just because your Toby, Verts it doesn't mean you walk straight into the team and this will be a big motivation for those in training who aren't in the starting 11.

Things are still majorly positive, you're always going to have issues besides we've had a tonne of issues in the past as well.

What problems?

- Jan has missed a single game because of either a small injury or because the manager is trying to get him to work harder.
- Toby wants to leave on a free after the season to potentially go back to Ajax (good intentions, as Herc said).
- Eriksen, who has been a great servant to the club for 5 years wants to go to RM but if they don't want him he's willing to listen to a new contract.

None of these players have gone on strike, thrown a fit in public, or disrespected the club or manager. What's unsettling?

That is exactly how i feel, i think the problem is the usual media circus that is created. I was listening to the football weekly pod and they were coming up with all manner of things that have not actually been confirmed but were just media rumours and stating them like facts. To some if they hear all that they probably assume there are problems going on.

Exactly this.

I think because we've had it so easy over the last 5 years under Poch with his fantastic man management that people are surprised anyone could possibly want to leave the club for somewhere new.

These are the problems every club of our size faces on a far more regular basis than we do. It doesn't suddenly mean that the club has problems internally because we have a few players, who as you say have been fantastic servants for the club, wishing to try something new.

Time passes and dynamics at workplaces change. Nothing strange. People get older and may want new challenges or whatever, like in any other business. Nothing to worry about in itself.

Tottenham Hotspur Ace Eager To Extend His Stay At North London: Big Boost For Pochettino?
According to a recent report by the Times (via the Sun), Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen is keen on penning a new deal with the club as his current contract runs out at the end of this campaign. The Sun has revealed that the Belgian defender was left out of the Spurs’ 18-man squad for last weekend’s clash against Aston Villa with Mauricio Pochettino being publicly critical about his poor fitness level.

Even then, the Times are reporting that Vertonghen wants to sign a long-term contract and extend his stay with the North London giants. Since completing a switch from AFC Ajax in the summer transfer window of 2012, Vertonghen has been an integral member of the Tottenham first-team. The Belgian defensive ace improved a lot under Pochettino’s tutelage and is currently one of the best centre-backs in the English top-flight.

Vertonghen Has Been A Top Performer For Both His Club And Country

The 32-year-old has made a total of 285 appearances for Spurs thus far, scoring 12 goals while grabbing six assists on all fronts. He has a decent goal-scoring record for a centre-half but is more renowned for his defensive prowess at the back. Vertonghen averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game in the top tier of England last season (stats via whoscored).

The Sint-Niklaas born prospect has represented Belgium in 114 international matches and registered nine goals for his nation in the process. He remains a key member for Belgium after he helped his country reach the semi-finals of 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia last summer.

What Does The Belgian International Offer On The Pitch?

Vertonghen is a substantial presence inside his own box as he can make some vital interceptions for his side. He is good in the air and can read the game well using his high football IQ. The Belgian talent is also one of the best ball-playing defenders in world football as he can pass the ball accurately from the back and can create a few chances for the front players.

Retaining a defender of Vertonghen’s ilk will undoubtedly improve Pochettino’s squad depth in the coming years. At 32, the former Ajax prospect still has a few years left in his tank to play at a high level. Spurs should consider keeping him happy as he could still have a lot to offer on the field.

Vertonghen’s Desire To Pen A New Deal: Massive Boost For Spurs?

The fact that Vertonghen is willing to sign a new contract will undeniably be a huge boost for Pochettino and his chances of keeping a strong squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the next few campaigns.

I thought Harrys comments after the game on Saturday about Eriksen's effort was interesting

Whether he starts or is on the bench, the most important thing from all of our points of view is that he gives everything for the team. ‘Obviously, there’s been speculation about his future but as long as he’s training hard and playing as hard as he can when he’s here, that’s all we can ask for. What will be will be but we’re happy to have him.

I may be reading more into this than what it actually is but this seems to suggest his effort in training (and pre season) wasn't 100%

Agree. And then you get shit printed like fact from ex arsenal players like Ian Wright trying to cause trouble.
I mean who gives a fuck what he thinks about whats happening or could happen at Tottenham! Just going to get a biased load of bollocks same as every time Merson or Alan Smith opens his mouth.
