I'm sure I read somewhere over the last 2 years that Jan actually wants more rotation to pro long his career. think he has picked up lengthy injuries over the last 3 seasons.

I like this one, save him for City in the most Ledlyísh way (y)

I don't think this is a big deal, his explanation about Dier covering 2 positions and also Aurier being able to cover either side made perfect sense, Jan was also looked a big sluggish in pre-season so at worse it's a kick up the ass. Fact he was at the stadium with the boys tells you that everything is fine in the long run.
Ironic Verts can cover 2 positions as well, arguably our best left back

We look better balanced with a left footed lcb, its horrible seeing Sanchez on that left hand side cutting back on his right, his not the most technical players at best of times

It was odd/unexpected that Jan was dropped. However i want to see more of this as we need to prep the next generation. Sanchez WON'T improve without game time, Foyth, Kwp wont improve either. They have to get minutes.

We've all cried for quality this is a consequence of that. Toby who i absolutely love will get the same treatment. We cant arrive at next season and cry about it. Clever rotation is what is needed.

I would like Poch to do the same with Harry Kane & Dele Alli/ Eriksen. Nothing more frustrating than watching a player be terrible but play an entire 90 minutes. Keep the players fresh with clever rotation.

Sorry but Jan not even making the 18 is odd no two ways about it. He was good pre-season, he looked in high spirits in the media session, he was one of the best last season. No sugar coating this, very weird.
Never mind the fact he's been here seven years and has been a certain starter when fit from day one

I thought Jan was withdrew due to a slight injury before the game.

Strange comment from Poch.

This is a mountain out of a mole hill. It doesn’t mean he’s done anything wrong, perhaps it just means Sanchez has been performing better in training.

Also I suspect he thought Sanchez could be the stronger defender and handle Wesley better. I reckon that’s the reason but Poch is hardly going to say that and undermine Jan in public.

It’ll be about money, he wants what he thinks he’s worth. New contract etc.
He looked totally pissed off.

Doubt it will happen to Kane much but certainly Alli and Eriksen now with Lamela fit and Lo Celso in the team.

On the bench
perhaps, possibly maybe
But out of the squad
for 'tactical reasons'
is nonsense and we all know it
and Poch knows
we will all know it.

3 into 2 does not go, and we have three very good centre backs to choose from as well as very promising players in Foyth and Tanganga. I absolutely love Vertonghen but if we’re going to spend a year bemoaning lack of depth, then we can’t start setting ourselves when our depth means that our favourites don’t play. We have a very good squad.

You've made me realise that if I ever wanted to go and troll on another forum that being sickeningly positive is the way to go.

Obviously we can rotate our CBs but not having him on the bench is a clear statement of some kind especially as neither Foyth or Tanganga were in the squad. I don't think it's as big a deal as some people think but it's obviously something.

Sanchez isn’t a patch on Jan when match day comes though. Regardless of how he is in training.

Sanchez for me has not convinced me yet. Big season for him as I said in the summer.

Agreed but the day will come when Sanchez is physically more superior than Jan due to age and decline. Who's to say that like Vardy when he quit playing for England that Poch rested Jan to manage him better for a game where he'd be more needed against City during the week?

Davinson only gets better with game time, Jan is getting old. I think the reason he was dropped goes deeper than that but on face value with what I'm saying it would make sense to play Sanchez ahead of one of our ageing CBs against a team like Villa at home.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if it was just a pragmatic decision from Poch. It could just be that he didn't fancy putting Verts up against Wesley first time out since it gets harder to get up to full fitness as you get older. It may also be that we're in the middle of negotiating a new deal with him which could be distracting. At least, that's what I hope.

We have a massive squad. With only 7 able to be selected on the bench I think will increasingly see Poch choose defensively flexible players as subs and rest the specialist players not starting. For example, Dier can play DCM, CB and RB. Aurier can play RB and LB. that makes them better subs than Verts or Davies (although both are better in their specialist positions than Dier and Aurier) as it means we can have more game changers on the bench. When Dele, Sessegnon, Lo Celso, Davies and Son are all available that means strong players will not be in the 18 on a regular basis. Especially if Eriksen stays.

Assuming this is our strongest side on paper:

Lloris
Foyth Toby Verts Rose
Ndombele Winks Lo Celso
Erisken
Kane Son

That leaves these players fighting for 7 bench spots:

Gazza
KWP
Aurier
Davies
Sessegnon
Sanchez
Tanganga
Dier
Sissoko
Wanyama
Skipp
Dele
Moura
Lamela
Parrott

Poch will disappoint someone every week. It also shows how hard it will be for Skipp and Parrott to get any minutes. Plus Sanchez is our future at CB and he now needs to play week in week out, especiallly if Toby and Verts don’t sign new contracts.

People spend years crying out for depth and more rotation, then get the hump when players are left out.

It's gonna happen a lot this season.

But this has obviously got nothing to do with that. Jan is our best defender and even if you think he isn’t Foyth is injured (and suspended) so it’s clearly not a depth issue.
