The question about his professionalism is an interesting one. I’ve never understood why he hasn’t bothered to learn Spanish if he wanted to stay at Madrid long term. His refusal to do that if I was his manager would infuriate me. It just shows a lack of commitment. I’m sure it’s probably because he’s too thick or can’t be bothered because he thinks he can get by without it. But it doesn’t really show much respect to his team mates.

You’d think it would be part of a player’s contract nowadays that they have to learn the language of the country they are playing in. If not and I was a club I would definitely make it a part of it.

Funny that an actual team-mate says this....

"He knows Spanish perfectly, the thing is that he is too shy to use it, which seems normal to me.

"I speak with him in Spanish and English, without distinction. And I see that his commitment to the club is total. He is a Madrid fanatic and he has given everything for the club. He is a great player, I don't need to say it."

It's a bit like Poch in his Southampton days.

It's smart. That way the media do not get things twisted, though they will try their best to do.

I understand Hertyid’a point but this is not your average 30 year old. The guy is a superstar and has unbelievable quality

It's also been stated before that Spanish clubs retain your image rights income.
So no, no oen else will be paying the 5-600k a week fee because they can offset it with giving GB his image rights back. Plus the fact that he will likely leave on a free and receive any transfer fee up front, also means his weekly wage will be no where near this figure.

Doesn't mean we're signing him of course, but all the arguments saying his weekly wage is too expensive and qouting his current conditions are being lazy, obtuse,...?

I mean if someone said to me, Gareth Bale was available for say 25 Million and 200k a week for a 3yr contract (= 360k pw before image rights and tax), would you still say that was a bad deal? What if it was 30 Million and 160k? Do I care that the fee goes to Gareth or to Real if Tottenham can afford it (and the other players it wants to sign).

I see too many people getting their knickers in a twist over how much Gareth Bale may or may not cost.

I still think we should be pushing for a two year loan.
Tricky call for Madrid, getting a 32 yo back on the other side. But he will have been playing regularly and will have obviously run down two years of his crazy contract.

I don't know why people keep mentioning the buy back clause tbh. The last contract he signed, and wages he now picks up, make this clause all but on paper meaningless.

The cries about Spurs not willing to pay wages or pay this or pay that and we have 50+ pages on a player that is on god tier money ...

Hahah.

IF it is doable financially, we should do it IMO. The guy brings in a winners mentality from one of the biggest, most successful sides in recent memory. He has done it in numerous finals, too. He is a player that could take us to the next level. He already knows the club as well, he knows the fans, so it wouldn't be a culture shock for the most part.

This has got Teddy Sheringham mk2 written all over it. Can see him spending more time in the treatment room than on the pitch especially given Poch's aggressive footballing style. Heart over head. We should be looking for the next GB not paying a fortune for the past his best one. Not saying he isn't still a wonderful player but not in the mould that we need.

I never got the point of it anyway. We got to match any bid made for him? Well so what, we don’t need a clause for that.

That's a staged interview. His understanding of the language is clearly way better than his ability to think and reply. So he's sort of learned the language but should be pretty much fluent by now. I suspect he finds it hard on a daily basis.
I think one of the problems is he also lacks confidence to speak it out loud. But this gets perceived as if he doesn't put the effort in.

Having said that he has been there for 6 years, in football, which is pretty much like having a part time job. After 6 years. even learning at a fairly slow rate he should be upper-intermediate, minimum. He probably only needs to be intermediate to please fans in football anyway. He doesn't appear close to that level.

Loan is the only deal that makes sense. RM pick up the wages above our limit and if he falls to bits they can deal with it. The only possible down side is that he couldn't play against them if we ended up facing them in the CL but I can live with that.

If Zizou has no intention, at all, to include Bale in his first team squad, then it would be in RM’s best interests to sell or loan him out.

No club would likely want to take a loan on him and pay his full wages. So even if RM were to pay 90% of his wages, there would still be a savings of 10% of his wages (not that the amount saved would have any affect on a rich club like RM) and it’s doubtful that RM would want to shoulder that high percentage of his wages. But that’s where I think we have a chance as I’m sure Levy would find a way to get RM to bear only 89% of his wages and we, the rest. :)
