I think whichever way you cut it, we're going to have to spend some serious wedge this summer to get the targets Poch wants.

Last summer proved that Poch doesn't want any of the secondary choices on the shortlist; the players you can pick up for £30m (or less).

So unless we change the habit of the last 20 years and spend big, big, money I do fear for how this transfer window is going to pan out.

Btw, fullbacks are incredibly important in football these days so a great RB is (or should be) a priority.

That doesn't have to be AWB, but we need to get someone in.

AWB will be a very good signing for United, they still need to prioritise a CB tho, we are going to need a RB too whoever it may be seeing as Tripper/Aurier will be gone.

It's clear our priorities lie in the CM/AM roles (Ndombele, Lo Celso) which means spending 60m of our funds (which we need for other pressing areas) ain't happening.

We can't afford to be reckless. AWB may go on to be an incredible RB but I'd much rather be strong in CM/AM. Considering some of our other links (Atal, Aarons, Semedo) may be gettable for half that and could still turn out to be very good options for us then we'd be making the right decision to drop out.

I'd add Meunier to that list. IMO forking out what it would take to land AWB would compromise the quality of who we could get in elsewhwere. I'd prioritise Ndombele and LoCelso over AWB all day long.

Shame we can't just slap down £300m this summer and get in the 5 or 6 players we need

Probably wouldn't have to bring anyone in for the next three seasons as well

I'm actually quite glad that we operate in the real world and not the 'monopoly money' world that most of our rivals inhabit. I like that little bit of moral high ground.

Agreed, but if you're Danny Levy looking at Trippier for £3.5m (bargain whatever we think of him now), Walker £6m ish, Rose bugger all, Davies what £6m ish again.. and then Aurier who has failed to impress at over £20m.. is he going to risk a shit ton of money on a 50-60m RB. Nope. I'd probably agree there tbh.

Most have probably seen it but Palace are being linked to Max Aarons at Norwich were AWB to leave - same report states United hold an interest in Aarons.

Thought I would throw this in here as it seems another bid from United will go in - if you believe everything you read.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love AWB to come to Spurs.

But... stating just sell Trippier and Aurier to fund, might not be as easy as some think.

Firstly, do either wish to leave, is an acceptable offer going to be made. Does AWB actually want to come to Spurs ( of course he does (y) ) is KWP ready as a back up/rotation. etc, etc.

Far too simplistic to just say sell two, buy one. The thinking might be spot on, the actuality might be harder to deliver.

Agree with your point that it’s probably not as easy as that. But in terms of outgoings Trippier has been heavily linked away to Italian clubs and some talk of United too, and looks like he’d welcome the move away after a disappointing season and becoming spurs fans go to scapegoat.

And as for Serge, today he’s been linked to Lyon, so let’s pray he could be a make weight in a deal for Ndombele! The same report said that also Monaco and to a lesser extent Inter too are interested. And I don’t think he’s ever really convinced so may welcome the chance to go back to a familiar league.

So in theory they’d cover the cost of AWB

AWB is an outstanding defender BUT he’s not known for his attacking prowess which is something we need as we’ve been reliant on our full/wing backs for years or provide the width. For £60m I want a full back who can both defend and attack... not someone who doesn’t fill the 2 attributes we require.

Atal?

Great going forward but not known for his defensive qualities. He’s a much more realistic option and very much in the Pereira mould. Given how we tend to dominate possession we would be utilising his attacking prowess a lot more than having to rely on his defensive capabilities.

Think he was moved into a more offensive position, but may well struggle. I haven’t watched him enough in honesty.

Oh, for sure.

There most probably is every chance that both Trippier and Aurier would accept a move if told that they're free to seek a new club.

I just find it somewhat comical and maybe a tad disrespectful to assume that they will just go in order for us to sign AWB.

Both are contracted to Spurs and don't have to go anywhere if they choose not to, certainly not to fund another filling their position.

Of course, this is the nature of transfers, looking to strengthen on a continual basis, but if we haven't got the extra wedge to sign AWB, they are not obliged to say adios to help us out.

That said, IF, both were happy to move, I'd be ecstatic if we put the monies towards snaffling AWB. (y)

He seems to rotate between full back and right wing... great versatility but whereas he excels with flair you do wonder whether he a) has sufficient defensive attributes and b) whether he see’s himself as a full back or winger.

Considering we're coming off a season where we've been punished over and over again at full back (especially in big games), I'd take the defensive player all day. Especially one like AWB that is a fantastic recovery tackler, something important for a possession team.

He'd still be my dream option, although Aarons' name is starting to come up again which is interesting.

Atal is exciting but I wonder if he's too green defensively. Meunier might be a better option from the French league, likely at a lower price.

If a deal for AWB can eventually be done at around £50m I'd love to see us go for it, doubly so if we end up selling our current top two.

Come on guys we ain't paying £60m for a fullback.

JJ said we are willing to spend big in key areas on Twitter the other day. Considering we have been linked with big bids for Lo Celso and NDombele I would guess that RB is seen as a secondary priority to central/attacking midfield. I think we'll sign a RB but it will probably be Atal or an equivalent foreign import for under £35m.

I think you are probably right. With RB it currently seems like we're waiting to see what happens with Trippier and Aurier before making any serious moves.

This is the thing. People are going on about backing Poch financially. Suggesting we should keep Eriksen and sign Lo Celso AND Ndombele. Suggesting we spend 60mil on a right back. Wanting major strikers, wingers and left backs as well.

Theres backing the manager and then there is being ridiculous. We aren't spending 300mil ffs.

EDIT : Madrid are the biggest richest club on earth. Even they need sales now to balance things out.

Semedo is another option who is apparently surplus to requirements at Barca. The other one I quite like is Benjamin Henrichs who ended up at Monaco, so if there'sanything in the Aurier/Monaco links, he could be an option. The big plus with Henrichs is that he's equally comfortable on the left or right, but I'm not sure how he's done at Monaco since going there from the Bundesligue.

Heinrichs couldn't prove himself for Monaco as a left back and couldn't offer the same width and pace on the right as Sidibe. He finished Monaco's campaign on the bench for eleven of the last fifteen games in which he was in the squad, and when he was finally brought back into the XI for their last two games against Amiens and Nice, Monaco played in this bizarre, inexplicable formation with Heinrichs playing alonside Sidibe on the same side of the field. Heinrichs played tucked in and back form Sidibe, almost the way Guardiola plays Walker. That said, he set up Monaco's only two clear chances in their awful loss to Nice in the last game, when he was given license to go forward and overlap with Sidibe. He is not a defensive liability and is technically sound and creative on the ball. He's just still all projection and has not developed at all since he was similarly all projection at Leverkeusen. He's worth a punt from somebody, for sure, but I can't help thinking maybe he needs to get some consistent game time at a place like Watford or Everton first.

I wouldn't touch Samedo. Juve and Barca shelled out huge money for Joao Cancelo and Nelson Samedo and one gets the sense that both teams want to unwind both of those deals...

Fullback is one of those positions that is so hard to fill at truly elite level. If AWB is out of our grasp, I would so much rather take a punt on a cheap (relatively) and promising English player like Max Arons or even Jayden Bogle of Derby who could come in for a year and just push and compete with Aurier and KWP with no expectations.
